FEEDBACK ON Editorial Director Uduak Oduok’s  Article, “The Urgency of Now, Putting Nigeria’s Fashion Industry on the Global Map.”

“Hi,

Was opportuned to read your article: THE URGENCY OF NOW: PUTTING NIGERIA’S FASHION INDUSTRY ON THE GLOBAL MAP.

Had it printed for my future reference. I consider the article very good. It was spot on on the state of the textile/fashion industry in Nigeria. Your recommendations on how to go forward is also commendable.

The industry in Nigeria is quite different from developed economies. We have more of tailoring and not fashion design. Fabrics such as ankara, lace etc are sewn to fit and not mass produced. Nigerian tailors do not understand pattern drafting and marketing/merchandising. So they are unable to produce a design in various sizes. There is also no world class fashion design/dressmaking school in Nigeria…this for me is where the industry needs to start.

In recent times, however, we have some outfits that have begun to churn our ready to wear clothes in mass quantities. These are however limited to t-shirts, school uniforms, boxer shorts, etc. that have straight forward designs and sizes are either small, medium, large and extra large formats

We must also not forget the huge penchant by Nigerian consumers for foreign made fabrics/textiles. Anyone trying to setup a manufacturing concern for textiles will have to confront this monster.

I have an interest in the Nigerian Clothin Industry.  .  . As you noted, its tough trying to get a handle on this industry. Really don’t know where to begin. . . but we trust God.

Once again, good article.”

“[I] saw the piece (you) did on the fashion industry in Nigeria and I totally agree with (you). There is a lot of work to be done and one way we can start is that the government should be involved in it. Also Nigerian designers should learn to come together and work together. I would be willing to do something about it but I can’t do it alone. Lots of people and work is needed to boost the fashion industry in Nigeria. I am working with some people in Nigeria on something and I hope it works out fine. One thing I don’t understand is that Nigerian designers travel for fashion week everywhere but they can not do the same in their country. One day sha it will all work out fine . . . Love (your) work.”
