Now you have your fashion business. What next? Well, you have to nurture it and brilliantly manage it so it can be successful. How do you do this? Independent of key business skill sets and practices that you already have or should have, you must also have specific management skills or hire someone who does to help you manage your business. What kinds of specific management skills are you required to have? The skills include first, the ability to be a good decision maker, second, the ability to manage employees and third, the ability to market your business i.e. customer service, setting the right price, advertising etc.

Ajibola ‘Ayana’ Olubiyi, our February 2010 LadybrilleNigeria Personality of the Month, is one woman who knows a thing or two about managing a successful business, especially in a tough business climate like Lagos. A passionate fashionista at heart, Olubiyi is the manager at Swe Bar & Lounge, Lagos. Barely two years old and under Olubiyi’s management, Swe Bar & Lounge has become the go to place for fashion and entertainment industry professionals, celebrities and regular Nigerian patrons. LadybrilleNigeria caught up with our very busy Personality of the Month to discuss and provide you tips on how to successfully manage your fashion businesses.

In our interview, Olubiyi discusses the characteristics of sucessful managers: good decision making, ability to successfully manage employees (clearly defined job descriptions, interview process, hiring, firing and dealing with underperforming employees) and marketing, among many. In discussing marketing, Olubiyi places heavy emphasis on customer service i.e. creating a value experience for your clients/customers that elicits an emotional response and keeps them coming back. . .

A Littie Background on Olubiyi

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Ayana, thank you so much for your time and this interview. Let me start first by giving our readers a little information about your background. Where were you born and raised?
AAO: I was born in Lagos. I was raised in the UK and Nigeria. I attended Corona Primary School in Apapa, went to Federal Government Girls College, Oyo, St Mary & St Anne, Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire for Secondary school and for college, University of Lagos (UNILAG).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Do you have any siblings?
AAO: Yes I do, 2 brothers.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I am always fascinated with names in general and their meanings. For all of us and especially our non-Yoruba speaking readers, what does Ajibola mean?AAO: It means I woke up to meet wealth.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Very intriguing. We hope you share your wealth with us or show us how we too can wake up to wealth. (laughs) Who is Ajibola? Who is Ajibola Ayana Olubiyi? How would you describe yourself?
AAO: (laughs) Superwoman . . .(laughs) . . . a woman of many parts, an extrovert and pretty passionate about the arts, fashion and culture.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (laughs) Superwoman, you seem to be! You do so much which we will get into very soon. But from one busy woman to another, have you figured out how to balance it all?
AAO: (Laughs) I wish I could tell you that there was a magic formula . . . (laughs) . . . but truly for me it’s all about prioritizing and delegating, because some things deserve less attention than others.

LADYBRILLE.com: Indeed. The balancing act remains tricky, nevertheless, doesn’t it?
AAO: It (does).

Olubiyi’s Career Path Before Swe Bar & Lounge + Managing a Business

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okay, you are a manager at Swe Bar & Lounge. Briefly walk us through your career path before you assumed your current position at Swe?
AAO:I started my professional career as a retail banker then went on to investment banking (portfolio management/stock-broking), took a break went to art school to learn how to make jewelry and here I am running a bar/lounge.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (laughs) Wow. Interesting where life takes us! Let’s talk about managing Swe. You make it look so easy. But, surely it must be a challenge managing any business much less a high pressured job like yours. How do you go about structuring your day in your role as manager? Walk us through a typical day in your life as manager?
AAO: A typical day for me usually begins at 12noon, armed with my to-do list, bar-stock management, meetings with suppliers and vendors, meetings with potential clients, event planning and also socializing.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Socializing! When do you have time to do that . . . when do you find time to answer e-mails, return calls . . . ?
AAO: I create the time. Like I said, prioritizing is key because quite a few of those calls and e-mails are with regards to the business.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Gotcha. How would you describe your managerial style?
AAO: Authoritative and democratic, at the same time, a bit of a contradiction you’d say but in the Nigerian context a firm hand is required (especially being female) in the industry we operate within.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I know you are one of a very few women in the line of work you do. What would you say is your personal management philosophy?
AAO:Price is what you pay, value is what you get . . . propounded by Warren Buffet. I’ve lived by this philosophy since my days in banking. The customer who receives value will always come back.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Solid philosophy and so true. Let’s narrow in on the “value” part of your management philosophy. For the many “boss ladies” and “boss men,” especially our fashion entrepreneur readers, who have to wear so many hats including that of managers, what does a well managed business look like? How do they know they are doing it right?
AAO: First and foremost a well managed organization’s reputation would speak for itself, this is external but internally a well managed company has good ratios, inventory ratios and the return on equity. These ratios tell you how well management is performing. For instance, (Accounts Receivable) AR Turnover is indicative of management’s collection policies, procedures and ability. Poor AR turnover may lead to cash flow issues, for example. I also rely heavily on client feedback to know if we are on the right track.

Olubiyi Speaks on Hiring and Firing of Employees

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Part of being on the right track is having the right team to help you deliver the value you speak of. Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, has said the best advice he can give entrepreneurs is hire slowly fire quickly. As a manager, what are you looking for when you are hiring a potential employee?
AAO: The first thing I look at on a resume or application is length of time at previous jobs. We want someone who is going to be committed to the job we are hiring them for. If they’ve had 5 jobs over the last 6 months, I need to know why. There are always circumstances that lead to people quitting jobs after a month or 6 months. We like to know why so we can determine whether this candidate is probably going to leave in 4 months or will stick it out for the long haul. We also look at reasons for leaving previous jobs. If there was a dispute between the candidate and their former employer, we want to know about it. This too helps determine whether the candidate is going to stick around. We want to hire people that are interested in developing careers with the company, not people who just want part time jobs because they’ve got nothing better to do with their time.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You’ve done your homework, you hire an employee but then he/she is not quite working out. How have you dealt with, for an example, an employee that is underperforming?
AAO: . . . The first step is ensuring that all of (our) employees have clearly defined job descriptions and know what’s expected of them. (Our) policy states one verbal warning, three written ones then termination.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see the authoritative and democratic management style at play. (laughs) Let me take you a different direction. One of the things I know you have been instrumental in doing at Swe Bar is to create an environment and work culture that is “family,” and it extends to your patrons. Share with our readers tips on how to create a similar work environment and culture while still getting the job done?
AAO: It’s pretty simple I put myself in the position of the client and treat them the way I’d want to be treated if I were in an establishment like ours.

Olubiyi Speaks on Leadership & Future Trends on Bar/Lounges in Lagos

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When I observe you and your work, you appear to have the critical elements of a successful leader in your capacity as manager: trust, care, commitment, communication and confidence- you take too many risks with your costumed themed . . . parties not to be confident (laughs). Explain for us why these key aspects of leadership are important in any business?
AAO: Thank you (laughs) . . . It’s important for business (entrepreneurs) to have good leadership qualities because businesses don’t run themselves. I can tell you from personal experience that good leadership skills lead to workers who understand what is expected of them and who are encouraged to meet and exceed those goals. Work flows more smoothly and thus more efficiently. Everyone stays focused on business goals, decreasing lost time and effort and productivity is increased.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Every guest that walks through Swe’s door must leave with a good experience and in your case word on the street is they often walk out with a great experience. With Swe’s many events, everything has to go right and if it goes wrong it falls on your shoulder as the manager. How do you plan for surprises or can you?
AAO:I always have a plan B because doing business in Nigeria requires that you may even have to have a plan C . . . ”Be prepared that something may go wrong.”

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What would you say are the trends for bars/lounges in the next five years in Lagos?
AAO:Definitely we will see more bars /lounges coming up in the future and I believe with the emergence of well educated owners, attention to detail, improved customer service and themed bars will be the order of the day. I also believe we will be seeing bar franchises as well.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Interesting. What do you think the future and 2010 in particular holds for you?
AAO: I wish I could predict the future but I pray to do bigger and better things within the hospitality industry and develop my jewellery label as well.

Olubiyi Speaks on Swe Bar’s Offerings

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Describe the ambience and aesthetic at Swe?
AAO:Swe has a warm and homely feel to it, very comfortable and relaxing. In terms of aesthetics, it’s ethnic mixed with contemporary art décor-a bit of the old and a bit of the new.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What are its offerings during the day?
AAO: A quiet get-away spot during the day that’s WI-FI enabled where you can have lunch with colleagues/friends and hold business meetings

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: At night?
AAO:Swe’s versatility is its uniqueness because it can be converted into a night club after hours. The slogan “The weekend begins on Thursdays and it starts at Swe” is no joke, because on Thursday nights with the live band the atmosphere is electric, Friday nights are the club nights with our in-house DJ and celebrity Guest DJs from time to time, Saturday nights are usually when events are held otherwise its old school music night and karaoke on Sunday is the business with a library of over 3000 songs, including Nigerian songs.

LADYBRILENigeria.com: You seem to have an open invitation to artists and fashion designers at Swe; not just the big names but emerging ones too. How important is the presence of a place like Swe Bar & Lounge in Lagos for Nigeria’s fashion and entertainment industries
AAO:? We’ve positioned ourselves within the top category within bars and clubs in Nigeria and we’ve always supported arts and culture and we pride ourselves on the relationship we’ve been able to develop within that sector with its participants and we place a lot of value on them, likewise we believe they place the same value on us.

Ms. Olubiyi Speaks on Online Marketing & Upcoming Valentine Events at Swe

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When it comes to social media, especially for a club/lounge in Nigeria, nobody does it as well as Swe and specifically you Ayana. You are on it with Facebook! Tell us how you have been able to use Facebook, for example, for the online marketing of Swe Bar events. How successful have your online marketing efforts been?
AAO:Why thank you for the compliment….We created a group page which has over 3000 members and is constantly updated with photographs of our regular nights and also of events and info about happenings at Swe. I must confess the online marketing efforts have proven to be very successful. The feedback is awesome.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How much of your time goes into mapping out and executing a sales and marketing plan for Swe Bar for each event?
AAO: That depends on the various factors required to create the event. If its solely a Swe initiative it usually doesn’t take that long but with regards to external inputs it may take longer as sometimes set deadlines with the externals are not met.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I know you always have so many themed parties whether Halloween, Thanksgiving and so much more. What are Swe’s plan for Valentine’s?
AAO: We are hosting a Valentine’s party with a different twist that’s all I can say for now. Don’t want to let the cat out of the bag . . . (laughs)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (laughs) Awww! Fine. That’s fair. For our Nigerian fashion industry professionals worldwide who might be interested in renting out your venue for an event, what is the process like?
AAO: It’s pretty simple when contact has been established, appointments are scheduled and we meet with the potential client, each event is weighed on its merit and we look to see if it falls in line within our policies and brand.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I like that it at the end of the day events must fit with the Swe brand and company policy. Brand compatibility is so important. Where can they reach you or a Swe representative?
AAO: We can be reached via various mediums, facebook, twitter, telephone calls, e-mails and at the bar. Soon it’ll be possible to reach us via our website.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Thank you so much Ayana! Any last pearls of wisdom to those looking to follow your foot steps?
AAO: Arm yourself with knowledge about the industry you operate within, that’s pretty important and treat your clients the way you’d want to be treated.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Thank you!
AAO: Thank you too for the honour

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde simply needs no introduction. However, in case you have been hiding under a rock for the past decade, briefly, she is one of Africa/Nollywood’s leading actresses whose work has earned her attention and awards globally.

LadybrilleNigeria.com caught up with the highly sought after celebrity for an exclusive all access granted into her fashion and beauty closet. Consistent with our down to earth Style Star signature features, we chat about everything: her music, film, charity work, hair, makeup, clothes and so much more! Dive in.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: ‘Omosexy, Omo Tee’ (Lol!) You know say me sef if I dey do dis interview, I must to cover everything or else e go be serious wahala for me from our readers and your fans! (Lol!)
Omotola: (Lol). . . There’s one nick name none of you know yet and I ain’t telling . . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Lol!) It’s only a matter of time. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria: From Oprah to Tyra to Wendy Williams and many Oyinbo celebs in between, everyone is keeping it very real on how they stay fly; and after Chris Rock’s ‘Good Hair’ we are all just having a good laugh on everything black women go through to stay beautiful. (Lol!). So, we intend to have a true girlfriend chat about your hair, makeup, skin, shoes, bags, clothes your music “ati gbo gbo.” (Lol!)
Omotola: I know right? With a (hectic) schedule, it’s quite hard but its an unforgivable necessity: 1. I have the most stubborn hair ever. It won’t relax. . . (Lol!) So I fix weaves often. However, I use Ellin Lavar and Motion products.
2. Make up: I love to keep it simple, but I’m a rocker and love edgy makeup i.e. smoky eyes. I use Maybelline and Mac eyeshadows,
Super cover/mac studio fix concealers and Victoria Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss.
3. Shoes, bags, clothes and all depends on what I need. . . they could come from anywhere.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Abeg consider dat one as teaser. We will dissect all that. Right now, make yourself comfortable, kick off your cyber shoes and let’s get into it! (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: First how are you and your family, your kids?
Omotola:Oh we are all great. Thanks.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I know you’ve been actively promoting several of your upcoming films but let’s talk specifically about the roles we are not used to seeing you and most Nollywood celebrities in. You are fast becoming the poster face for a Nollywood celebrity that is quite involved with numerous charities. Tell us a bit about your charity work?
Omotola: It’s been a wonderful journey since 2005. I started to work on my NGO called YEP now OYEP(Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme). I also work with the UNWFP (World Food Programme) and have been a UN Ambassador since 2007. I work with children and women on food and relief.

Sometime in 2007/2008 as well, I worked with ‘Save the Children’ in a campaign called ‘Re-write the Future’ in London. This year(2009) saw me working with Amnesty International on a campaign against ‘Maternal Mortality,’ (bringing an end to women dying during the process of childbearing). Sierra-Leone was chosen because it has one of the highest rates! The Campaign continues so we need as much support as possible. Please go to www.amnestyinternational.org. On World Aids day, I was at the UN New York Headquarters to contribute as a UN ambassador and spokesperson also for SACAIDS.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Impressive and highly critical work that affects our women and children. Another role most are not accustomed to seeing you in is, Omotola the musician. When an actor crosses over to do music or vice versa, whether in Hollywood or Nollywood, there is a healthy dose of skepticism. Why music for you? Why now?
Omotola: Music I love. . . (Lol) . . . REALLY. . . and it’s here to stay! Now, is the appointed time. . . (Lol)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol) You sound like a preacher with “Now is the appointed time.” (LoI!) On a more serious note, personally, I feel you can actually hold your own when it comes to music. I liked ‘Feel Alright’ as a song BUT girlfriend kiloshele (what happened) with the video? It took your upgraded style and personal brand to . . . I don’t even know what to call it!! (LOL!) What were you trying to achieve conceptually with the video?
Omotola: Okay, THAT IS NOT THE OFFICIAL VIDEO. . . that was a test from a video director in Hollywood who fell in love with the song, like everyone else. His name is Ron and as we all know now, it didn’t come out well. Problem is? HOW DID IT LEAK?

If you recall my first album, a video was shot for one of my songs called “Dance.” Despite all these setbacks am moving on. . . THE VIDEO FOR FEEL ALRIGHT IS NOT OUT YET.”

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Good to know because that was a no no). So, tell us a bit about what to expect with your future music projects, including your music videos?
Omotola: I’m working on bringing out befitting videos that should make myself and fans proud. The future of my Music is very bright.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Ami (amen). Do you have a current album out in the marketplace? Where can we listen and/or purchase?
Omotola: The next album is ready. However, the release date has been moved to 2010. Ladybrille, you will definitely be informed about proceedings as they unfold. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Cool we will wait. Let’s make a brief stop to your work in Nollywood. First, how have you managed to stay relevant in an industry where fresh faces and strong talent emerge everyday?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . God is Good.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: The current sentiments are that Nollywood is losing its place in African film production and Gollywood is “taking over.” I am not sure I understand these sentiments . . .
Omotola: Nollywood is definitely the leader in African movies however, the Ghanaians are fast learners. They know our weaknesses and are trying to come through with that. Smart move, Nollywood hopefully is seeing this and would keep inspiring. Kudos to them for being good students but we remain the Masters. (LOL!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okedoke! Alright are you ready to pull the make up bag and open your fashion closet so we can raid it? (Lol!)
Omotola: Please with all pleasure. Leave your check book behind though.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Check kini? Ahn ahn sista which one you dey? Lol!
Okay. So, I remember searching quite hard for Nollywood fashion films, films with strong story lines, acting and costumes. I was so frustrated that I couldn’t find any until I saw Queen of Aso Rock. It was an answer to my Nollywood fashion craving at the time. The fashions you wore in that film were brilliant. Who was responsible for all the styles you rocked in Queen of Aso
Rock?
Omotola: Waoh, thanks…will you believe this? Till date, that has been the only movie the financier bought the idea of me costuming my character. I costumed myself with the help of my designer winner’s couture.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: One of the things I have watched you do, especially in the past three years, is literally grab the bull by the horns and take charge of your personal brand (your style and public image). You really have put the “SEXY” in ‘Omosexy.’ (Lol!) You have also CONSISTENTLY maintained it in a very chic, regal way. When did you get your ‘aha’ moment like Oprah would say to take charge of your image and style?
Omotola: (LOL!) . . .Since I started having kids, 1997, the votes were not on my side as I was the new darling of everyone after winning my awards for ‘Mortal Inheritance’ and everyone wanted to meet the new girl on the block (esp. the dudes) only to find out I just got married and just had a kid. Prior to this time being married was bad enough ,being a mum? End of career! You’d be relegated to motherly roles. I was told I’d loose all my fans. Even though it’s been a challenge, I was not going to give up on me. I needed to make it known it’s possible to be a mum and still be hot!

LADYBRILLENigeria: The verdict is in. You have made it known indeed and that is why we are here with this Style feature of you! Let’s talk about your skin. That is also part of the change I have noticed. Your skin just dey glow like say you discover the fountain of youthful smooth silky skin. (Lol!) Share with us the steps you took to your healthy glowing skin?
Omotola: Thanks. I’m happier and more relaxed. I have body scrubs every 3 to 4 weeks. I moisturize, pray and drink lots of water.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Speaking of moisturizing, what are some of the current facial products you use?
Omotola: ‘Clean and Clear’ everything for my face. . . (Lol!) Deep clean Neutrogena wipes, and Timeless Secret Night and Pure
Radiance Day spf20 uva/uvb.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Hmmmmm . . . .do you exfoliate often?
Omotola: Yes. Once a week to prevent over drying although I have very oily skin. I use Dermalogica products.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What’s your typical beauty regime?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . I go to the spa once a month and get a body scrub and deep tissue massage. On my own, I wash off makeup every night, apply a clean and clear Persa-Gel 10 to take care of spots, Timeless Secret Night treatment to sort out all day’s abuses. . .(Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) Abuse ke? How many cups of water do you drink in a day?
Omotola: Recommended is 8 glasses sometimes I fall short of a glass or two but I’m working towards consistency.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) I am just trying to find the beauty tips for our readers and of course your fans o! So more questions. (Lol!)
Omotola: My pleasure. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What foundation do you use?
Omotola: Dermablend or Supercover Foundations and Mac studio fix concealer.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about makeup (lipsticks, eye shadow etc)?
Omotola: Not a lipstick fan but if I must, MK Sinature in Red Salsa or Mono in Musty Muave.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Another major upgrade has been your hair mama! (Lol!) We are all loving every look you are rocking. Your current seemingly luscious long curly locks are to die for! Is that Indian hair you are using?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . You are so funny. It’s Brazilian, regrettably. . . .(Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) What’s your favorite weave to rock. Brazilian or Indian weaves?
Omotola: I have both, but my stylists thinks the Brazilian suits me more. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see a lot of stars doing the invisible hair line weaves the way Beyonce does it and it is so obvious. Have you ever had that done?
Omotola: You mean like Omotola does it? (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! I guess so Madam. (Lol!) Is Bobby’s Signature also responsible for making your hair look as fly as it has been
lately?
Omotola: I worked with him in the past but not now, its UGO CEO of MAKE ME and on the road I work with Tonnie.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How do you keep your locks looking fresh and shimmering?
Omotola: I use Ellin Lavar instant shine enhancing & frizz fighting mist with moisturizing Cupuacu, it helps the scalp too.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! I can’t even say “Cupuacu.” Pele (sorry) sister. I told you we would take your style apart. (Lol!) Everyone wants to know so this is where I am really just doing my job. (Lol!)
Omotola: Your doing a good one too . . . your bill’s mounting.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) Send the invoice to my accountant. (Lol!) Let’s transition to your clothes. Your selections on the red carpet have been really impressive lately. Your selection to the ‘Mind Game’ Premiere was just dazzling, the jersey gray dress that just draped so well and seemed to move so fluidly on you. Who designed that?
Omotola: It was desined by an Itallian designer, Robert Rodriguez, thanks. The one worn to IJE’s premiere was by Zizi cardow(Nigeria).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Given you have curves, what are your three rules for ladies with curves when it comes to shopping for clothes that will flatter their curves?
Omotola: For women with shapes like Beyonce, Jennifer lopez, Omotola and Kim Kardashian, they should:
1. Pick clothes that define the waist i.e wraps, belts e.t.c
2.Depending on if you are busty or not, pick clothes that give a good support, cleavage or broad shoulders.
3. Dont forget to check out the rear in the dressing room, that’s the highlight isn’t it?

What I’ve learnt? Concentrate on a part at a time it’s less fuzzy, above the waist or below the waist…Most of all,
walk tall, beautiful woman!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Well said. Accessories! Where do you shop for them and what are your rules on accessories?
Omotola: Anywhere and everywhere. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I have noticed you are striking some fierce poses on the red carpet o! No be small ting. (Lol!) Tell us your favorite ‘Omo Sexy, Omo Tee’ red carpet pose.
Omotola: Some into the camera fierce look, to be sincere, I’m trying to change that . . . Lol! . . . it’s so 2008.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! on “It’s so 2008” (Lol!) Four kids later and you are setting the example of how not to give up on self to millions of women who juggle wife, mommmyhood and a demanding career. Beyond your job, what pushes you to take care of self?
Omotola: My God told me I can be whoever I want to be. I believed and I have seen. . . it’s real, he’s real.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When history is written about Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, what is the one thing you hope history writes about you?
Omotola: THE UNBEATABLE.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If you weren’t singing and acting or you are doing these and have the chance to open a fashion business, what kind of fashion business would you open?
Omotola: (LOL)…KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED…

LADYBRILENigeria.com: Okay they are crossed! What is your favorite and highly recommended restaurant in Nigeria to eat, especially for ‘Nigericans and Jand’ folks who will be visiting this December?
Omotola: Jade’s palace, Issac john, G.R.A , if you love Chinese and Sweet Sensation for all African and Contemporary.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where do you shop for your shoes within Naija?
Omotola: Mostly exquisite, Awolowo, Ikoyi.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Tell us your favorite perfume?
Omotola: Flower by keno, Burberry Red or Mauboussin. . .depending on my mood.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where in Naija is a good place to get your nails
done?
Omotola: My house with my Nail attendant, PAT.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: PAT, watch the line form for your services at Omotola’s place. (Lol!) Do you have a favorite
Nigerian designer?
Omotola: Depending on their work per season. I’m very choosy because of my body shape and image. Very few designers are adventurous. Used to love MAYA she made most of my gowns (since she’s left the country), so far, I’m loving me some ZIZI CARDOW.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Zizi is definitely adventurous. Our last question for you, for anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing, etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together i.e. stylish?
Omotola: HIRE A STYLIST, trust me it’s worth it eventually. .. (Lol!) I should know. After a while you get it and can navigate on your own. . . hopefully. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Lol) Pele Omotola. This is basically the longest Style Star we have
done but we truly wanted to leave our audience satisfied with their numerous style questions for and about you. (Lol!)
Omotola: Oh my gosh, I’m tired oh. . . there’s nothing left for my Autobiography!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Ya got jokes. Lol! Alright we don basically cyber raid your closet finish so it is only appropriate we say ‘Ose gan’ lol! Thanks for letting us visit. (Lol!) We applaud your contribution to Naija’s fashion industry. Because of you, even more Naija sistas will be looking fly. Ose gan!
Omotola: . . . Thanks for your love and noticing . . .(Lol!) . . . now get out of my closet, will ya, while I recuperate . . . I need my
beauty sleep. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Ouch!

Nigerian born Ibidun Eni Fagbemi-Balogun aka Eni Lise Balogun, mother of three girls, who describes herself as “shy and straight up blunt” has always had a fascination with the beauty business. Eni’s father owned a cosmetic business in Nigeria, Groom Away Gray (men’s hair grooming business) and as a child, Eni who was her “daddy’s pet” observed him closely, traveled with him as he juggled two countries and continents (USA & Nigeria) and knew she would someday mirror his footsteps.

While in Nigeria, Eni attended Christland and Gideon International Children School grade/primary schools. For high (secondary) school, she attended Adebayo Mokuolu College,A.G.G.S, among many. In 1995, she moved to the USA to join the rest of her family, her entire family lives in the States.

While in the States, Eni juggled her beauty passions hair styling (her first real passion) and working for makeup beauty brands like Fashion Fair, M.A.C and Bare Escentuals with school. She completed school and on one of her many visits to Nigeria, it became clear it was time for her to return to launch Lise Beauty Range because as she explains, “ I wanted to add change to the makeup industry in Nigeria because when I came down on Vacation in 2005 there wasnt really an UUMMPHH!”

Change she has added with her company Lise Beauty Range. Enjoy our interview with Eni where we cover the beauty business, trends and how you can also set up your own fashion beauty business.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Eni I am excited about this interview with you. I feel confident that our readers will walk away truly enlightened about Nigeria’s beauty industry because from everything I can see and tell, you are one of the few with a clear command of your craft which is refreshing.
Eni: I’m glad to share my thoughts and I hope it does help.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: First how are you doing? How was your day?
Eni: It was great! A few good news, and with Ladybrille it’s always good news.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When we look at the West, we can trace the history of cosmetics as far back as 100 B.C. in Cleopatra’s time. Let’s make a comparison. When do you think the Nigerian Woman’s love for cosmetics began?
Eni: I think it’s been quite a while back really, but now it’s looking very professionally applied and the fact that Nigerian women are getting oriented about the importance of makeup is a plus.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Makeup wasn’t always accessible to the average woman. People like
Max Factor helped make makeup accessible and to some degree there is a shared similarity with accessibility in Nigeria. I still remember growing up in Nigeria and hearing particularly the older women in Lagos frown on the young “sisi ekos” who chose to wear makeup. The presumption was they were “ashawos” (loose women/prostitutes) we’ve come a long way, haven’t we? (Laughs)
Eni: (Laughs) . . .sure it’s been a journey but I’d say its worth it. I think then it was more of a culture thing, that you have to be an irresponsible lady to wear makeup, so if you’re bold enough to go for
it you must be a lady with no attitude or respect which usually qualifies them as the word (ashawo). (Laughs)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What would you say is the general attitude towards makeup at this point in Nigeria?
Eni: Now if you’re (not) fine tuned with the latest makeup trends you’re not IN! Basically Nigerian women have embraced makeup, the application process and the Glam that comes with the package.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Here we are, almost ready to usher in 2010, yet in a country of over 140million people we can maybe count three or four small and at best medium size beauty companies (Toni Payne, Lise Beauty, Banke Meshida Lawal, Tara-Fela Durotoye) serving the Nigerian woman. It almost seems like a crime. Across the globe cosmetics and specifically makeup is big business. Why do you think Nigerians are lagging in making this a lucrative business?
Eni: We are not lagging at all. It just takes a lot of guts to convince Nigerians to go for a product. But the fact that we try and are still recognized for it, is a big step. I know someday like some 20 years from now we’ll have over hundreds of makeup brands and at least they will learn from our success and failures and become better in the industry. But for now, easy does it. Nigerians will appreciate the makeup industry we have now and yet to bloom, it’s just that the makeup artistry industry just got people’s attention just less than 10yrs ago and in the states we can say more like a hundred. Though now I’ll say brides respect our crafts more because they appreciate the artistry services we create on their special day.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: In the West, we still have a problem with brands that cater to women of color. I feel Nigeria is in a great position to create Made in Nigeria cosmetic products that can be marketed worldwide to women of color. Why aren’t we there? Is it a problem with our laboratories, electricity or our general attitudes towards the beauty business? Why are we not having Nigeria’s Estee Lauders or MAC?
Eni: In Nigeria anything is possible as long as we’re given ELECTRICITY but till then, nobody wants their profits or bonuses going to Fuel supply because really makeup can’t stand heat!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: We can’t talk makeup without talking skincare. Can you address the ongoing problem of skin bleaching among our women and some of our men? Have you had to deal with this in your line of work, yet?
Eni: So many times, it’s something we weren’t taught in makeup schools but you get to discover yourself, but then if you learnt special effects, it’s an addition you’ll be glad you learnt. I just believe if
you don’t love yourself on the inside, you can’t love that person on the outside. But again then if it makes you feel better, do whatever you want to gain that confidence.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Let’s get back to makeup for a minute. I noticed some Nigerian personalities, yourself included, are sort of mirroring the West in that makeup brands are by known celebrity names/personality driven: Estee Lauder, Mary Kay Ash, Bobbi Brown and so forth. Do you think that is a good think for Nigeria’s beauty industry? If so, why?
Eni: It really is good if you want the best packaging and response from your customers. [E]veryone wants MAC. If it not MAC they don’t wanna use (your products). But the Nigerian weather is extremely humid for products that aren’t manufactured for a 101 degree weather. It’s gonna be similar but the thing is, we request for what we want here.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I know you’ve been conducting makeup seminars in Abuja and Lagos, how are you positioning your brand to be like Avon, MAC or I-MAN since really the market is open for a savvy business minded artist like yourself who knows her stuff to take over?
Eni: Take over. . . You flatter me! Its just passing my knowledge to aspiring artist and teaching the real artistry trade, tips, techniques of what being an artist is and getting the right training and being a Professionally Certified and trained artist. One of the reason I’ve trained over 150 makeup artist all by
myself and still going on strong is because I just love what I do. So, from there I decided to start the makeup artist association called ”PROFESSIONAL & CERTIFIED MAKEUP ARTISTS OF NIGERIA” P.C.M.A.N. We’ve had an overwhelming response so far due to creating a body and a good support system for makeup artist so we can be recognized and be heard.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: A real issue and really alarming health concern is the use of expired cosmetic products by many of our women. Could you tell us, if you know, the current regulations regarding cosmetics in Nigeria?
Eni: The only regulation I know is that you can get a NAFDAC approval for imported cosmetic products here. But see some people prefer to cut cost by buying expired products all in the name of discounts and end up ruining their skin. I’ve seen a lot of expired makeup, fake brand name makeup .I just pray hard for the people that know about it but choose to ignore it. That’s one of the topics we are addressing next at our next P.C.M.A.N meeting to boycott companies that retail expired products.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What measures, if any, has the government put in place to help combat the influx of expired cosmetic products into the country?
Eni: I know they’ve been trying because I watch the news and I see seized products and so on, but for some reason there’s always a leak somewhere and it gets out in the market.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Is there anyway to scrutinize retailers selling these expired products?
Eni: So many WAYS, but they need to follow international standards of scrutinizing issues like these. But you know what it’s a big fish to fry. It’s gonna take lot s of honest and determined people to take
that on.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: So let’s really get into your beauty business because as you know, we are very much about the business of fashion. Walk us through your journey. You decide to relocate back to Naija to start your business, Lise Beauty. What were the first steps you took in establishing Lise Beauty when you got to Naija?
Eni:I did test the waters for a bit, the response wasn’t bad .I secured my studio Ikoyi Lagos .At first people can be so loyal to international brands. But I don’t do much talking though once you see my products on me or once it’s tested on the client . . . It simply speaks for itself.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Are beauty businesses required to incorporate in Lagos like you would have done if you were in New York?
Eni: Yes I think any business basically that wants to run as a legitimate one should be Incorporated.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How did you get your first customers?
Eni: Way back when I started was friends and family. But now still friends family and client referrals, I mean tons of them. (laughs)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in getting your beauty business up and running?
Eni: I didnt have much friends here in Nigeria and getting around to meeting new ones was kinda out of my way. Getting the supplies and everything I need was hard getting someone to construct anything. So I had to ship most of my things from the States. But the electricity issues still makes my skin crawl because makeup and heat aren’t friends, especially foundations and glosses. So we have to run
the generator 24/7.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Hopefully our generation helps solve this crippling electricity problem. It affects every aspect of life. It’s ridiculous! Moving on . . .I noticed you have been giving seminars around the country. Why did you decide that was an important aspect to your business?
Eni: I love pleasing my customers. That’s me! We had overwhelming calls for our products and training outside Lagos we just had to grant their wish and not be selfish about it. If Lagos has Lise why can’t Abuja or Port-Harcourt? (laughs)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You are one of the few makeup artist and beauty entrepreneurs who actually knows what she is talking about. What next for Lise Beauty?
Eni: MORE NEXT AND LADYBRILLE WILL BE THE FIRST TO KNOW IT.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Sounds good! As more fashion/beauty entrepreneurs begin to enter the marketplace (Funke Adegbola of Ella Brown Couture, Elaine Edozien of ShoMya), what are your predictions for the future of Nigeria’s beauty business?
Eni: We’ve just started and you aint seen nothing yet, really I’m highly impressed!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: We have had major multi-nationals enter Nigeria’s beauty market but they have all packed their bags and left. What are your predictions on multi-nationals and their conglomerates now that the Western fashion world seems to be launching numerous brands in the country?
Eni: I won’t say its easy. It takes a lot of NERVES to be in it. Thread it softly and just be basically affordable.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okay. I am a young woman, I have heard about you, read about you on LadybrilleNigeria.com and I am beyond excited for an opportunity to work with you as one of your Independent Beauty Consultants, like Mary Kay or Avon. Explain to me what I need to do to make this a reality.
Eni: Firstly you have to have people skills. We’ll put you through it if you don’t have the training or idea on marketing. You have to be a trained makeup artist or we’ll train you.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What are the benefits of being a Lise Beauty Independent Beauty Consultant?
Eni: You get a crash course on makeup artistry at the Lise makeup school. We give rewards depending on the selected packages ie. Ipods, blenders, toasters, digital cameras, free makeup boxes, free Lise gift certificates and more . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Thank you Eni. It has been a pleasure having you. Thank you for sharing your insights with our audience and the world.
Eni: You’re very welcome.

Dola Billz (Dola) has a deeply passionate and almost restless energy about him, an energy that is at once rebellious as it is creative. This energy insists on being free to communicate his ideas and creativity ranging from political to just plain pop culture, to the world. Indeed Dola’s need to freely express himself to the world permeates every aspect of his life including his style sense. Dola’s style sense is as intriguing as his creative music videos (most of which he directs and styles), numerous tattoos, the ring he occasionally wears on his lips and his overall personality.

Born Mayowa Dolapo Bello in the United Kingdom (UK) South East London, Dola spent time in his youth between Nigeria and London. He attended Geofrey Chauncer Primary School Bermondsey, had a little stint at Apata High School in Isolo, Lagos until his refusal to follow school rules got him kicked out of Apata. Yes we all know that guy or girl, growing up, that got suspended or expelled from school. Dola was, however, not one of those “bad apples” that would never find his way. In fact, he later completed high school (Secondary School) at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo and in 1999 returned to the UK for what he explained to LadybrilleNigeria was “for more life opportunities, University and generally for a change”

The UK indeed provided Dola Billz more life opportunities, focus and a change, a huge outlet for his creative and arguably anti-conformist style and energy. In 2005, Dola completed college receiving his degree in Business Economics and Marketing from the University of Dundee. Today, he is the CEO of his own independent record label called 166 Family Records. Dola who has been spending years in the “music trenches” so to speak building and refining his skills, is now en route to Lagos to lay his claim to a piece of the Nigerian music industry pie; with some of his musical works that are fast becoming hits. Songs like “Pu’Yanga,” “Sing 4 Me” and the really creative “Jembe” music video directed and styled by Dola are already causing consternation in the UK and on social media networks like You Tube.

We were impressed with Dola’s style sense which, for us, can best be described as a convergence of the styles of Lenny Kravitz, 50cents and Kanye West to produce a unique Dola Billz signature style complete with layered meanings, we knew he had to be one of our features on LadybrilleNigeria Style Star. Get to know Dola Billz our “Pu Yanga” LadybrilleNigeria Style Star.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Mr. Dola Billz aka Pu’Yanga. How you dey?
Dola Billz: I just dey like dey dey Miss, how are you?

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I am fine. Thanks for asking.) Before we really get into your style, let’s talk a bit about your music background. First, how did the Dola Billz name come about?
Dola Billz: I get called “Dola” by my family, and the “Billz” is as simple as the fact that bills always come so one needs to make some P’z (money) in order to sort ‘em out.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I hear you on making the P’z. How long have you been making music?
Dola Billz: As far back as I can remember. I used to mime songs with Tilla (friend, musician and member of 166 Record Family) in High School, but I only started recording music in 2005 after I graduated (University).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Why did you start the 166 company?
Dola Billz: I believe in my creative edge so I wanted to start an Independent Label to keep my creativity and sound the way I want, as well as being able to give other people the opportunity to do their thing as well.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: “Sing 4 Me.” The beats on that is sick! Who is the producer?
Dola Billz: Yung-Kurt. He is my compatriot and like my younger brother but also a sick producer.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You are about to do the Pu’Yanga promo in Naija but let us know what Pu’ Yanga means and how to get our Pu’Yanga on?
Dola Billz: Pu’Yanga simply means “Put Yanga.” We just slanged it because we wanted to write it out the way we would say it (Tilla’s idea). I gather “Yanga” is an Hausa word for “pose.” So together it means “throw a pose,” just feel free to put some flair into whatever you are doing and that’s how you F’akosi (put yanga into it) . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Got it. Back to the 166 name. What does that stand for?
Dola Billz: 166 Chiltern Estate Portland Street is my best friend’s Flat (apartment) that I moved back to at the start of January 2006. [I]t’s where my music making became very serious, it’s also the place where every other member of the 166 family used to come chill out, make music and hang-out.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Wow! To see it all come together, very cool! Dola, let’s get into your style. You know I look at your style and see so much you are communicating. I see political statements (The tee-shirt with the person dumping the swastika in the garbage can), restlessness, funk, hip-hop, rock n roll, preppy/conservative, razzness “ati gbo gbo e” (and everything). It’s like you’ve got so many personalities all lumped in one body. How would you describe yourself?
Dola Billz: Someone that you can’t put in a box. So like you said, I am a man of different personalities that doesn’t wanna be perceived in one way or the other. Thanks for noticing that tee-shirt. I was thinking about how I can make an anti-racist statement with just a glance, and a coca-cola can was where I got the idea from (the symbol bin it) got changed to Bin-racism in one glance, without having to be vocal. I must say I am very political because I tattooed “Make Poverty History” on my back as well. I went to the G8 Summit in Edinburgh.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (I could glean that from observing you and your style). I also noticed the tattoos on your neck and arms. What do they mean and why did you get them?
Dola Billz: All my tattoos have a significant meaning to me. The musical notes on my neck are followed by my signature which signifies when 166 family got registered as a label. In a nut-shell it makes me feel like I am signed to my music. I also have a 1960s mic tattooed on my arm, an ace of spades, and some words from one of the most intense tracks I have ever written called “Time.” You can kinda figure out what all that stands for. My back is covered in tattoos but I am sure you don’t want me to keep going on.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (LOL! No, because it would become a LadybrilleNigeria Tattoo Style Star Feature. Not exactly what we planned. Lol!) For many who might never have heard of you who is Dola Billz and what is the Dola Blilz brand about?
Dola Billz: Dola Billz is about expressing myself in my own style to the world in (m)usical, visual, and artistic ways, and hope people like and can relate to my Dola way of doing things.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Let’s talk about your “Dola way of doing things.” I know you have heard “Swag” or “Swagger so much in the music biz. How are you positioning yourself to be more about the music than the “Swag” or a healthy balance of both?
Dola Billz: I completely agree with you that the word Swag has been out-played so I don’t tend to use it, and it is a conscious decision to make myself more about my music than what people perceive as swag. But, if people say I’ve got swagger then I simply say “thank you” and get on with it.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You are in Dubai now on your way to Naija soon. How is Dubai? What hot spots have you checked out?
Dola Billz: Dubai is an amazing place, and I reckon everyone should come here at least once. The spots I have checked out are JBR, Cavali bar, Budha Bar, bike riding in the desert, and going shopping in the Dubai mall. . .there are a lot of malls I must add so if you enjoy shopping Dubai is the place to be.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Awesome! I am sure our readers would love that bit of information!) Having said there is an overuse of “Swag” and it is “wahala,” allow me to still use it here because it applies. (Lol!) You get swag. You really do. (Lol!) By the way, “whassup” with the Isolo and Mushin shout outs you keep giving? (Lol!) “Whatcha” know about Isolo or Mushin for that matter? (Lol!) I was (also) cracking up when I heard you do a shoutout to Okota. (Lol)! It is nice.
Dola Billz: Thanks Miss (on) the swag thing and trust me I know every thing I need to know about Isolo, Mushin, Ejigbo all the way to Ikotun. (Smiles) Basically my grand-dad’s house is in Balogun in Mushin. We live in Ire-Akari Estate in Isolo and my dad’s older brother’s house is in Okota. If you know the geography of these places you will know that they all lead to the other and I grew up in all these places, so every time I am in Naija, I can spend any night in any of these places. They are all home. As to Okota, of course. I spent a lot of time in DT in Okota, got suspended from Apata High school in Okota and Da Boss Yusuf (my cousin) stays in Okota so that’s where I tend to stay when [I] am in Lagos.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I grew up first in Ikeja and then Ejigbo went to school in Isolo so very familiar with the area. I used to hear those Danfo drivers and Molue conductors yell destinations. I no remember Okota, although I know where Okota dey. So Okota get swag now? Na wa. (Lol!) I had friends who attended Apata and yes I do know Ire-Akari Estate well well.(Lol!) Way to put Isolo, Mushin and the rest on the music map!)

Let’s get into style. I saw you styled the “Sing4Me” video. Is that accurate? Did you style yourself and Saffie? The interior decor?
Dola Billz: Yes I styled the “Sing4me” shoot,” me and my very close associate Esther Areola styled Saffie and the rest of the models. I (also) styled the shoot itself in terms of myself and the decor, which I was very hands-on with because I figure it had to portray a complete visual that I had in my head, so all the decor was pre-1960.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Kudos and highly impressive. Do your other side hustles include styling or it was just for the video?
Dola Billz: Right now, I style my own projects. For example, I styled Yung-Kurt’s “Jembe” video which I directed as well but I think some Naija artist’s can do with my styling help. It would just give them a better visual look I reckon, so you can pass on my number and we’ll arrange a fee . . . I lie?

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (You no lie. Lol!) Still on the Sing4Me video, what were you thinking conceptually when it came to styling for Sing 4 me?
Dola Billz: I thought I’d make it look like a old school movie, so in other words, I can get away all the other scenes like the underground which I used to incorporate light horror.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your personal style?
Dola Billz: All-over the place . . . and not easily duplicated. I simply wear anything that I think looks good on me and reflects how I am feeling.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What influences your style?
Dola Billz: I travel a lot, around Europe. I live in London which I feel is the fashion capital of the world. I don’t limit myself to a certain look and I like to experiment with clothes. I am also a market boy and I don’t necessarily have to rock a designer garment just because it’s a brand. Basically I throw things on without being too serious about my actual look, and if it looks good then am out. It’s as simple as that.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: “Efere bodi dey” rock Mohawk these days. You also are rocking your own Mohawk. What’s up with that?
Dola Billz: Point of correction I rock a Dola Mohawk. . . it’s with a lean to the left. I cut my hair myself so in order to be different I cut mine like some Bobby Brown thing slightly to the left and no tail.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see! Good for you. What are your rules when it comes to accessories?
Dola Billz: Simple, neat and use it to customize your look.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I love your colorful scarves. What is your rule on shopping for scarves?
Dola Billz: Buy the ones you like, and don’t be afraid to mix colors. Sometimes I just wear scarves because I don’t like being cold, so scarves always come in handy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about shoes? (Tell us) your favorites and tips for shopping for shoes?
Dola Billz: Kicks. I own a lot of kicks: Nikes, Bapes, DC’s, Duffs. [I] also like old school shoes like Moccassins, Boat shoes etc. My tip on shopping for shoes is to buy the right shoes for the right look.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see you love the shades, lots of colorful ones too. What’s the deal on how you select your shades?
Dola Billz: The more different the better as I like looking different from other people, and I wear shades all the time so they are like the god of accessories as far as I am concerned. Plus, I don’t restrict shades to just a sunny day, you could see me rocking some at night. Brands like Charles Jourdan, Ray Ban, and Diesel make real nice ones.

LADYBRILENigeria.com: I think what I enjoy most about your style are your tees. You wear some really interesting tees. Where do you shop for most of your tees?
Dola Billz: H&M, Uniclo, Bathing Ape, Diesel, and Pull n Bear do good tees. I like to customize my own tees. I come up with an idea for a print and pass it on to a printer to put it on a plain tee as well.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okay. You ’bout to hit Naija. Can the Oyo boy tell us the happening spots in Naija you will touch? (Lol!)
Dola Billz: Insomia, Caliente, Grotto, News Cafe, and just chilling in DT in my ends.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: LadybrilleNigeria is about connecting and promoting Nigeria’s Fashion Industry. Who is your favorite Nigerian fashion designer and why?
Dola Billz: Wale Adeyemi. He was the first designer to actually incorporate graffiti style writing to Tees and not echo like the world is being told. Another Nigerian designer I like is Hade2 (he is based in London); and I really like a Ghanian designer from South-East London called Forreduci, watch out for this guy’s collection. It’s sick.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Any favorite Nigerian shoe designer?
Dola Billz: I don’t know any Nigerian Shoe designer, so maybe you can send me some contacts. Besides that, my cousin Aro makes me flip-flops when I am in Nigeria.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I got you). If you were not doing music or still doing music and had the chance to be a designer, what would you be designing?
Dola Billz: Everything. Tee-shirts, jackets, couture, shirts, and even female dresses, and I will get on to my designs in a bit. I already have a few sketches. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Very ambitious and creative! For any of our readers who finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Dola Billz: Just stay cool, calm and collected and enjoy yourself because my number one rule is when I enjoy myself everyone seems to as well. . . trust me try this it always works.

You probably saw her yesterday at the 2009 American Music Awards performing with Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) but in case you missed her, we give you a front row seat to Celestina Aladekoba in our coveted LadybrilleNigeria Style Star feature.

Twenty five year old Nigerian-American Celestina Aladekoba is a dancer and choreographer whose real star power shone through with her dance performance in R&B legend Prince’s “Black Sweat” music video. Prior to “Black Sweat,” Celestina danced for artists like Missy Elliot, Will Smith and Beyoncé, mostly as a background dancer. However, her impressive skills and strong work ethics helped her secure a spot as the leading lady in Prince’s Black Sweat video.

Since then Celestina has danced for even more celebrity artists like Brian McKnight, Black Eyed Peas, Usher, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Brandy, Outcast, Nick Cannon and Jennifer Lopez. She has also diversified her creative portfolio to include acting and modeling. Celestina has made appearances as an actress in television shows like The Game and So Raven; and she has also modeled in national campaigns for corporate companies like Ipod, Crystal Light and Ford.

Celestina’s path to the top was never all about the arts. In fact, she was on her way to becoming an Entertainment Lawyer, mainly to please her parents. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Music Business and a minor in Philosophy from the University of Southern California but instead of taking the next steps to gain entrance into law school i.e. take the LSAT exam, she ditched the law school route to follow her true passion, dance and the creative arts. Today, she is not only rising and rising to the top, but the dancer, actress, brand amabassdor/model is now adding a new title to her rapidly expanding creative portfolio, musician. Her Music Business degree should come in handy, don’t ya think?

Celestina has just dropped a new single titled ‘Omoge’ and is shooting the video as we speak. We caught up with the rather busy LadybrilleNigeria Style Star to talk about her style and of course get tips on how you can look as “fly” as Celestina! Enjoy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Celestina before we get into our style talk, tell us some of the upcoming projects you are working on.
Celestina: I’m prepping to shoot my music video for “Omoge,” recording, performing with J.Lo at the American Music Awards on Sunday Nov. 22nd, and much more. (She performed yesterday).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Most of us are used to Celestina the dancer, what was your ‘aha’ moment that made you decide to venture into music?
Celestina: I’ve always had a passion for music. Dance was my steppping stone into the industry. I was a Music Business & philosophy major in college wrestling with the fact that deep down inside I wanted to pursue a career as an artist and not the so-called “more professional” entertainment lawyer career that would appease my parents.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (We applaud you for following your passion.) You’ve dropped one song so far, “Omoge.” Great beat on that by the way. Who is the beat maker and what is the song really about?
Celestina: Quin Pearson of “Missing Sounds” is the producer. The song is an introduction to a sequel to come. The main idea is women empowerment. Once the sequel is released I think the full picture will be very clear.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see you are choosing a sexy route. “Sweat dripping all over me” (Lol!) Is that because sex sells? Go easy on the fellas mama!
Celestina: (Lol!) Actually I say Black Sweat dripping… Most people know know me from working with Prince most especially in his music video “Black Sweat”. I still have folks who call me ‘black sweat’ till this day… (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Oh Okay. At least now we get it. Lol!) Just curious, what Nigerian musician is currently blazing on your IPOD?
Celestina: Asa, she is amazing.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Yes she is. I was just listening to her this past weekend.) You appear to have a very bubbly personality. Does your personality affect the way you dress?
Celestina: I’d like to think so…but many a time I find that people are wowed by my persona and don’t expect me to be as nice or funny. I’m always asked if I’m a model and I guess there are stereotypes for a person with a modelesque type swag that doesn’t encompass charisma.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Who are you telling?! I understand you. Lol!) Okay let’s delve into our style questions! How would you describe your style?
Celestina: Depends on how I feel. Sometimes it’s tribal couture, other times edgy, and there are definitely days when I’m just a plain Jane. . . (Lol!) But I do have a fetish for unitards and tights. (smiles)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (smiles) You danced in many music videos. Which one, so far, do you believe captures your style sense off and on stage?
Celestina: Honestly I don’t think you will get the full essence of Celestina until my own music videos. This is where I can showcase ‘me’ and ‘my alter egos.’ When working with other artists you have to play the role you are being casted for and fit their creative team’s vision. I guess that’s called acting. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You have rocked many red carpets across the USA. Who are some of the favorite designers you enjoy wearing on the red carpet?
Celestina: Sue Wong put a fabulous dress on me a couple years ago and I was strutting!!! But I like working with stylists like Douglas VanLaningham.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Have you made a grand entrance on any red carpet decked in a hot Nigerian designer outfit? Your answer better be “yes!” (Lol!)
Celestina: Okay I won’t say no… (Lol!) I’ve worn jewelry by Nigerian designer Yinka Blaize. I’ve worn Marina Zoe by Yinka Blaize at numerous events.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Describe your body shape for us?
Celestina: Bangin’! . . . (Lol!!!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see self-esteem is not an issue for you. Let’s get into a bit of a style pop quiz to really get how you style your “bangin’” body shape ‘Omoge’ (Lol!)

LADYBRLLLENigeria.com: I am most comfortable in?
Celestina: leggings/tights. You can dress them up or dress them down. They’re comfortable and great for movement.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If I wasn’t dancing, singing, hosting, acting (Phew!) (Lol!) or I am stilling doing these and have the chance to be a designer, I would design?
Celestina: Gonna throw a curve ball. . . I’d go into cosmetics. Make-up!!! As for clothing. . . I will definitely focus on fashion for tall curvy women at a reasonable price.

LADYBRILENigeria.com: (Amen! on fashion for tall women curvy women) My tightest Naija food joint to eat in my city is?
Celestina: My mama’s house. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (See. Mama can’t go wrong. Lol!) My fashion addiction is?
Celestina: Right now it’s shoes and accessories. (A playful sad smile)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) That was fun! Okay, give us three tips, red carpet veteran, on how to glam it up for the red carpet?
Celestina: Gloss, Stillettos, and a smile.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You definitely have “Cwagger” whenever you are on stage or just plain in front of a camera. (Lol!) For any of our readers who finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Celestina: Believe in yourself and commit to the character. That will outshine everything. Your exterior can be on point but if the interior is lacking you’re just another boring pretty lady on stage.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Alright Omoge, ose gan. (Thank you much!)
Celestina: Mo dupe (grateful) (smiles)

In all facets of various societies, worldwide, you can find Nigerians doing their country proud. One such Nigerian flying the green white green flag ,so prominently and boldly, is Funlayo Alabi. The DC/Maryland based Funlayo is co-founder and owner of AgroBotanicals, a company she founded with her husband Shola Alabi which focuses on obtaining fairly traded raw shea butter from women cooperatives in Nigeria; and shipping these shea butter products to the USA. AgroBotanicals also serves as a wholesale company selling large quantities of shea butter (1000lbs to container loads) to mid size cosmetic manufacturers.

Funlayo handles marketing, public relations and some of the daily business operations while Shola primarily researches, develops and manufactures the products. The fierce entrepreneurs have two subsidiaries under AgroBotanicals. The first is the Shea Radiance line of luxury spa products, also created from fairly traded shea butter. The second is Shea Radiance Supplies, a company that caters to small scale manufacturers selling small amounts of shea butter (5lbs -100lbs) in the natural and organic cottage sector of the spa business.

We had the pleasure of delving into the mind of the socially conscious and environmentally driven Funlayo Alabi, LadybrilleNigeria Personality of the Month, to discuss the beauty business, shea butter, shea products and what it takes to be successful fashion/beauty entrepreneurs. Read on . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria: Funlayo, first, there is a serious love affair with shea butter. How did that come about?
Funlayo: Having children with problems like eczema (youngest son had eczema) and extremely dry skin (oldest son had extremely dry skin prior to a kidney transplant) pushed us to revisit old remedies we remembered from our childhood. We asked my mother to bring us a few pounds of shea butter on her visit from Nigeria and we started using it on the kids and ourselves. The results were very encouraging and we realized that by adding different oils and humectants to shea butter we could create really effective moisturizers. Everyone in my house loves shea butter. Our shea butter formulations are so effective that they eliminate the need to use petroleum based products on the skin.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Give us the brief history of how you founded the subsidiary, Shea Radiance?
Funlayo: Once we began formulating our products and sharing them with friends and family, it became evident that there was a market for effective natural based moisturizers. We did some additional research and felt there was a need for luxury natural and organic products based primarily on the functions of shea butter. A lot of the large companies are begining to incorporate shea butter in their products, but use a very insignificat amount and they use refined shea butter. We wanted our products to be rich in unrefined shea butter so the customer would feel the immediate benefits to their skin.

LADYBRILLENigeria: For those who might not know, what are the qualities of Shea and where does Shea come from?
Funlayo: Shea Trees grow in the West African Savannah. They can be found in Burkina Faso, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal and Togo. Scientific research has confirmed what our grandparents have known about shea butter. In addition to being a superior moisturizer, Shea butter also relieves eczema, soothes burns, promotes healing, eases muscle aches and colds.

Shea butter is rich in bioactive properties:
• Antioxidants such as Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Flavinoids including Catechins (Similar to those found in Green Tea)
• Triterpenes with anti-inflammatory and protease-inhibition properties
• Phytosterols which improve skin metabolism and reduce inflammation

LADYBRILLENigeria: As you know, Nigeria’s beauty industry is very much a part of the fashion industry. You are actively involved in trading Shea from Nigeria. Briefly describe the current state of Nigeria’s beauty industry as you know it?
Funlayo: Nigerians have always been on the cutting edge of beauty and fashion. We (Nigerians) are extremely creative at taking the old and creating something new and fresh. I see a move towards more natural and traditional beauty solutions growing in Nigeria. Lots of Nigerians are going for a more natural and organic look with their hairstyles and their fashion. The Nigerian fashion industry is on the verge of a major breakthrough on the international stage.

LADYBRILLENigeria: When all is said and done, what kind of footprint are you looking to leave (outside) and most expecially within Ngeria, as a business woman?
Funalyo: I believe that for any business to remain profitable, it must be sustainable. Shea butter production is primarily a woman’s business. As our business grows and prospers, we want to see the cooperatives we buy from grow and prosper. The shea butter producers are the caretakers of the shea trees that grow in their villages. If they are exploited and not paid fairly, what is the incentive for them not to have the shea trees chopped down and sold for firewood/charcoal when money gets tight?

I want my business to have a positive impact on the local community. Many companies buy shea nuts at a low price and ship them out of the country to extract the butter. We prefer to have the women do the shea butter production because it adds value to the product and they make a better wage.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Speaking of the women producing their own shea butter), as the owner of a business, to a large extent your business values are an extension of you. What are Shea Radiance’s business values, if any?
Funalyo: We want our business to be around long after we are gone. Our business model is based on sustainable practices that have been best summarized by Andrew Savitz in the triple bottom line:
People
Planet
Profit
LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Okay, let’s touch on people and planet.) You and your husband are even more remarkable than I thought. [I] love that 10% of proceeds from sales of your shea products go to the Agricultural Initiative for Women in Africa (AGRIWA). Explain why it was important for you both to get involved with AGRIWA?
Funlayo: AGRIWA is a non-profit organization that we are in the process of setting up. While in Nigeria in April (2009), we saw many opportunities to do good works in the rural communities in particular. We believe in giving back. We do it in our personal lives and we felt that as our business grows and expands we needed to have a vehicle that would allow us to do charitable work. Women in rural communities are especially needy of medical and educational support for their famillies. Our goal is to be able to fund in a small way projects that will improve lives and alleviate poverty. We hope to partner with other organizations that have a heart for the poor so we can do joint ventures with them.

LADYBRILLENigeria: So, I received the (review samples) Ultra Rich Body Cream, the Chocolate Truffle Pure Shea Butter (thanks for putting a warning label that says do not eat it (laughs)) and the Pomegranate Whipped Shea Butter. Could you explain the distinctions between pure vs. whipped shea?
Funlayo: Yes. Shea Butter is a very versatile moisturizing base and we feature this by creating 3 distinct textures of moisturizers using shea butter. The Chocolate Truffle Pure Shea Butter is the raw shea butter scented with a hint of cocoa essential oils. It has the firm texture of shea butter. This product is a great healing balm and can be used for moisturizing dry callused feet at bed time, sunburn, cuts, eczema, dry nails and lips. It’s a great spot treatment.

The Whipped Shea Butter is half shea butter and half combination of nourishing oils whipped into a rich souffle. This oil based delicacy is great for those who don’t have the patience to work with the raw shea butter beacuse it is easier to apply. It is also excellent mositurizer for the dry winter months. It is a great hair and body moisturizer.

The Utra Rich Cream is a rich creamy textured shea butter product. It is filled with antioxidants and extracts including Baobab etracts, Marine Extracts, Pumpkin and Guava extract. It is a very rich cream and a little goes a long way. This cream keeps the skin hydarated all day long long.

LADYBRILLENigeria: The Ultra Rich Body Cream is indeed VERY rich. Is that for all skin types or just really dry skin?
Funlayo: It’s for all skin types and those with dry skin will appreciate the benefits even more.

LADYBRILLENigeria: I like your packaging. The Chocolate Truffle packaging is not only attractive but the container is 100% biodegradable. I am really impressed that you are especially conscious about your environment. (If) you have lived in or visited Nigeria, we are far from being as conscientious about the environment, unless of course you go to the villages. What do you think has made you that sensitive about our responsibility to the earth and our job to do our part for a cleaner environment?
Funlayo: Thank you. It took us almost a year to design that package from the time the idea was conceived. We wanted a package that would convey the beautiful, renewable and sustainable nature of shea butter. We are more sensitive about the environement because our business in shea butter is dependednt on these trees being available to produce fruits. If the women who are the caretakers of these trees decide to cut them down, it will have a negative impact on the environment and our business. This is why Fair Trade is an important component of being good stewards of the environment.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Let’s touch on the “profit” aspect of your business value systems) I read on your blog that you recently visited Nigeria and gave a speech in the Niger Delta area. You identified five primary concerns in supply chain logistics that affect Nigeria’s ability to be profitable in trading shea. Briefly explain each concern to us and why we should care?
Funlayo: Yes, we were in Minna, Niger State for a Shea Butter Financing Workshop sponsored by the Niger State government and USAID/West African Trade Hub. The major challenges faced by Nigerian producers is lack of financing from the banks. In spite of all the talk about supporting agricultural initiatives, that money is rarely seen by those who are really interested in developing the shea butter business. Another challenge is the lack of committment to quality standards – in haste to make money Nigerians are sometimes known to compromise on quality. The last challenge is the need to rebrand Nigeria’s image. Negative reports of Nigerian ethics hurts all our businesses. I know that there are many excellent and creative entrpreneurs in Nigeria. We just need to hear more about them and less about the corrupt ones.

LADYBRILLENigeria: I like that you have a blog that is regularly updated and seems to be an extension of your customer service to your clients. How important is that in today’s fashion business world?
Funlayo: Yes our blog is an extension of who we are. We try to stay updated and this can be a challenge with so many conflicting priorities. Our customers want to about our trips and other interesting facts. I also know that as Africans, we have a unique opportunity to educate and inform others about all the good that is coming from the continent. We currently have two blogs, http://www.shearadiance.typepad.com/ and http://www.sheabutterexperts.com./ The same extends to the fashion world because people want to stay informed on the trends. I am amazed at the number of incredible designers emerging from the continent and the only reason I know this and can brag about it to my American friends is because I read blogs/websites such as (LadybrilleNigeria) that highlight this.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Your business is involved with the West African Trade Hub in the USA. How can Nigerian fashion and beauty businesses like yours, looking to trade with the West, use the West African hub to their advantage?
Funlayo: The West African Trade Hub was created to fulfill a mandate by the USAID to promote trade between the US and West Africa. It was through the Trade Hub that we made a connection with our partners and cooperative in Nigeria and have since made several trips with members of the trade hub to the shea areas in Nigeria. The trade hub also helps execute the AGOA mandate which also promotes trade of certain items, including textiles, crafts and fashion from West Africa to the US, tariff free.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What next for Shea Radiance?
Funlayo: Well we just updated our product line with new labels and logo. We are looking forward to the 2010 shea harvest with the hope of buying and selling lots of shea butter.

LADYBRILLENigeria: How do we support your work and where both online and offline can we find your products for purchase?
Funlayo: You can find us online at http://www.shearadiance.com/or shearadiancesupplies.com. We are also in the Mall at Columbia. Our non profit efforts through AGRIWA will be published on AGRIWA.org soon. Those in the Washington DC Metro Area can find us at the Shea Radiance Kiosk at The Mall in Columbia, on the lower level beside Kay Jewelers during the holidays.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Thanks Funlayo for being our personality of the month. We are honored and congratulations with all of your great work. (It) is not as easy as you make it all look.

What does Nigeria’s Sasha “First Lady of Hip-Hop” have in common with international celebrities like Queen Latifah, Brooke Shields and Kimora Lee? If you guessed her “height!,” you are correct. Queen Latifah is 5ft 10,’ Shields and Kimora Lee are both 6ft and Sasha is 5ft 10in.’ Height, however, is not the only thing Sasha shares with these celebrities. This Nigerian hip-hop queen also shares the ability to wear clothes that flatter her curvy on the top and bottom physique. It is indeed why she is a featured StyleStar on Ladybrille®Nigeria.

Briefly, the triple threat of beauty, brains (law graduate) and talent (musician and fashion designer) emerged on the music scene in 2001 competing and winning first runner up at University of Lagos’s Unilag’s ‘Girls Nite Out’ annual talent hunt. In 2002, she met and signed with Trybes Records and by 2003 had released her hit single “Emi Le Gan.” Sasha is the first female artist to be nominated from West Africa for the prestigious KORA awards and also the recent winner of “Best Female” 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards. She is now signed with Storm Records label.

We tracked the busy “First Lady of Hip-Hop” down and in a really relaxed, fun and straightforward style, learned all we could about her style sense and of course got tips on how to look and stay “fly” just like her! Enjoy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Sasha, congrats on your recent win at the Channel O Music Video Awards! How did you feel standing on that stage to receive your award?
Sasha: WOW! I went through a range of emotions! From being shocked to excited to totally numb and finally just at peace. I felt like I was finally having my moment. (lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: The knee length neck flattering black dress with puffy sleeves you were wearing, who designed it?
Sasha: I designed it myself. It is an “Eclectic by Sasha” piece.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Before we really get into your style, what new projects do you have in the works in terms of music?
Sasha: There’s just so much going on right now it’s an exciting time in my career. The album “Sashaspeaks” will be out pretty soon. I’ve worked with some amazing artists so far: Sauce Kid, Omawumi and Dama Do Bling (Mozambique), to name a few. I’ve also worked on Jon (Naija Sings winner), Mo’ Cheddar and Pype’s upcoming projects, the video for my latest single “Making Money” will be released soon and followed closely by the remix video so I’m seriously on the grind. (lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Busy “gyal!”) Alright! Let’s really talk more fashion and style! From Cleopatra to Rihanna inspired you are always on point with your many hair styles. We are trying to catch up. (Lol!) Who is responsible for your “tight” hair styles?
Sasha: (Lol!) Well I get bored easily so it’s only natural that I experiment. It’s a lot of mix and match and Patrick and Bobby himself at Bobby’s signature are just as adventurous as I am so we rub minds and make it happen!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your fashion style and what do you think it says about you?
Sasha: Hmmmmm . . . this is very cliché but I really think (a person’s) style is a reflection of their personality. I totally love to dress up and don’t like being in a box, so I try different looks but make sure it suits my figure and I feel like a million bucks! As for what it says about me, probably that Sasha is not afraid to be different!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: From one tall girl to another, it can be a challenge atimes for tall girls to find clothes with the right fit. Where do you do most of your fashion shopping?
Sasha: I know right? One just has to think on their feet. I do my major shopping in the (United) States because there’s more variety and the clothes tend to run bigger and (more) appropriate for my figure. There are also a number of shops in Lagos I step into from time to time but I don’t have any hard and fast rules when all else fails I just make something. (Lol!) But if you’re like me then you have to be patient. I never just take something off a rack and I try everything to be sure it fits right before I buy it . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What’s your favorite music video to date that you feel truly captures the essence of your style on and off stage?
Sasha: I’d have to say “Adara,” because I got to do a lot of role playing and share my introspective side as well!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I heard you are a designer. How long have you been designing?
Sasha: Yes o! “Eclectic” by Sasha, I think it’s safe to say I’ve been doing that for 5 years now.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What inspired you to start designing?
Sasha: To be honest I just got frustrated. I’m a very animated person and there were times I’d think up a performance and what I want to wear to bring it to life would be totally unavailable, and so I decided to start going to the fabric market and get it done myself. My mother had a fashion house while I was growing up called “Poise Fashions” so it wasn’t a totally new experience because I used to be buried in her catalogs back in the day but I still intend to get some professional training.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: With Nigeria’s design industry growing so rapidly, do you plan to launch a Sasha clothing line? As in make it official?
Sasah: Most definitely! I’m working very hard on building the brand and also in talks with a lot of people but my core focus is to provide beautiful and reasonably priced clothes for everyone, so with the grace of God look out for an “Eclectic” by Sasha retail store coming soon.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Amen to “providing reasonably priced clothes for everyone!”) Who is your favorite Nigerian designer and why?
Sasha: Hmmmm . . . I’d say it’s a tie between Deola Sagoe and Lanre Da Silva Ajaji. I absolutely love their styles. It’s different and adventurous and not everyone can pull it off; but I generally rep my Naija people so shout outs to everyone doing their thing and putting us on the map. . . I see you Jewel by Lisa!!!!!!!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What improvements would you like to see in Nigeria’s fashion industry?
Sasha: I haven’t been to many fashion shows here so I can’t comment on that, but I suppose like every growing industry, I’d like to see it be more accessible around Nigeria and not just in Lagos and Abuja. I’d like to say well done to Wonuola Odunsi for starting Le Petit Marche (LPM) which has been a great networking experience for young designers and has opened doors to fresh ideas and additions to my wardrobe. (lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Speaking of Le Petit Marche), tell us some absolutely cute fashion boutiques or shops to check out in Naija?
Sasha: You definitely want to patronize Obinna of Greys Fashion. His cuts are absolutely amazing and he has great fabrics as well. Mimi’s Place is great too and although I keep postponing my visit there, you need to check out Liam’s Fashion and if you are into vintage clothing then of course you have to be at LPM, the last Sunday of every month at La Saison in Ikoyi.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where is the best place to go get something as simple as eyebrows done?
Sasha: My makeup artist (Kashogi) does my eyebrows but the best lashes in Lagos are done by Nike Akande at Imagine Norman Williams Ikoyi.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about a great spa treatment in Naija?
Sasha: The “Day Spa” of course! It’s very private and their customer service is on point.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Your skin appears to always look well hydrated and blemish free. Share with us your skincare regime? Do you drink lots of water and eat your greens because if so, that is a hard act to follow. (Lol!)
Sasha: Wow thank you! It’s definitely the Grace of God oh! But when I’m being good I do drink a lot of water (its easy for me because I love water) and it’s not a myth if you wipe and wash all the make up off every night before you go to bed. You’ll see remarkable changes. I (also) use moisturizers and sunscreen before I put my make up on and the rest is just free styling. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Nothing do you. (Lol!)) As Nigeria’s “First Lady of Hip-Hop,” you do not seem to be heavy on accessories. What is your rule on accessorizing an outfit?
Sasha: It’s easy to get carried away but I try to keep it simple. Coco Channel said it best, “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.”

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I have to sit up when you start quoting Coco Channel. (Lol!)) Would you give us three important fashion tips you feel every woman should know?
Sasha: (1) Know your body. Wear your clothes, don’t let your clothes wear you; (2) Be yourself. Don’t be a fashion victim. Just because it is in doesn’t mean it works for you;
and (3) always invest in a great pair of shoes you can afford and on a personal tip? You’re never fully dressed without a smile. (lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Yes indeed.) For anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Sasha: That takes skills. I’m still learning myself but I think the most useful tip would be to take a deep breath and take your time. When people get nervous, there’s a tendency to try to rush through it and get it over with as soon as possible, so take a few moments to collect your thoughts. . .

Ladybrille®Nigeria Style Star is a feature we hope becomes a regular one. For us, fashion is intertwined in all aspects of the creative arts and our Style Star feature is all about showing the fashion nexus. We highlight Nigerian celebrity designers, actors, artists and other personalities, who from our research, have a strong style sense. We track these stars down and in a really relaxed, fun and straightforward way, learn all we can about their style sense and of course get tips on how to look and stay “fly” just like them!

Feel free to e-mail us at info@ladybrillenigeria.com or leave your comments with your recommendations of celebrities. Kicking things off for our first Ladybrille®Nigeria Style Star feature is Bouqui Folayan. Enjoy.

****************************
Bouqui Folayan aka B.O.U.Q.U.I is a a gospel artist whose vibrant personality, inspiring lyrics and unique delivery are as memorable as her style sense. Whether she is rocking her signature mohawk in varied shades of red and blonde or spotting some funky shades, hooded jackets and tees, Bukky always keeps things funky, memorable and most importantlly fun. We caught up with our style star who has also just launched her new album titled “REDEFINITION” to see how she rocks out for Jesus!
LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your style sense?
Bouqui: I think style is who you are and how you feel per time. . .so I would say that I dress the way I feel and because I am mood motivated, I would say that my sense of style emanates from my mood. But to total it up you can say modest, responsible, free spirited and fun, lovingly decent. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What’s your favorite music video to date that you feel truly showed your style sense?
Bouqui: Well I love “Morile” because not only did the story line show that we are having fun . . the dressing also said stuff about me. . . I love hooded tops with jeans.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Who does your hair? You’ve got the most splendid hair styles?
Bouqui: (Lol!) Thank you. . . My hair is BOBBY’S SIGNATURE, HE CREATES MY HAIRSTYLES HIMSELF.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If you were not a musician or you still are and decide to branch into the world of design, what would you be designing?
Bouqui: HOODED SHIRTS AND JEANS OR NICE STUDDED JACKETS OR TOPS WITH ACCESSORIES. I AM REALLY GOOD AT THAT . . . A LOT OF MY HOODED TOPS WERE BOUGHT PLAIN. . . I DESIGNED THEM MYSELF AND WAIST COATS.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Who is your favorite Nigerian deisgner?
Bouqui: I respect all of them. They are really creative. I am just looking for ‘me’ in one of them. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What is your favorite stylish store in Nigeria to shop?
Bouqui: (Lol!) In Nigeria . . . ? (Lol!) Nada. You just buy as you see. We really don’t have shops like Macys, Footlockers, JcPenny etc. in Naija. We just have shops that sell all and if you don’t get what you want with your money you’re going home sad. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Give us three of your favorite beauty tips?
Bouqui:
1. Wear what fits you, be carefully carefree.
2. You dont have to go with the trend to be trendy. Be creative.
3. NEVER make yourself uncomfortable to be fashionable. They will complain anyway. Just be yourself. Be confident.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Finally for anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing, etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look stylish?
Bouqui: Be comfortable. Dress according to the theme of the show so you dont stick out like a sore thumb. Don’t overdo or under do. When in doubt, wear black. (Lol!) Of course with silver or gold accessories. (Lol!) You can never go wrong . . .wedding, church, funeral, award night, performance etc.

HAIR AND MAKE UP is number one priority. No matter how nice your dress is or shoes are or purse, if your make up is crap or your hair OR THE BIG ONE, YOUR CONFIDENCE ( is not strong that is not good). PACKAGING IS KEY. . . YOU CAN SELL ICE TO AN ESKIMO IF YOU PACKAGE IT WELL. . . OR SAND IN THE DESERT OR CONFIDENCE TO BOUQUI. (Lol!)

Bouqui is currently touring in the USA for her new album, The REDEFINITION. If you are based in the USA, you can catch her Live in Arlington, Texas on October 31st and in Washington DC on November 29th, 2009. Visit Bouqui’s site for more info.

Fashion sketching, how common is it to see this in the West? Very common. Indeed before most fashion designers sew their designs, they typically put pencil to paper with sketches of the brilliant and at times crazy ideas going on in their heads. The fashion sketches then serve as a road map for their sample creations and ultimately larger garment production from that sample. Fashion illustration which encompasses sketching but is not as common as sketching is also something you would see more often in the West than Nigeria.

Fashion Illustrators are responsible for helping fashion professionals such as fashion magazines, retailers, public relations and marketing communicate their fashion message through their drawings, sketching or paintings.

Understanding this backdrop and quick definitions, for industry novices, can you name any Nigerian Fashion Illustrators? How many Nigerian “designers” are you aware of that sketch their designs before attempting to consruct the real deal?Okay so maybe a hand or two went up but for the most part, most of your hands remained by your sides. Allow us to introduce you, in this exclusive, to our Ladybrille®Nigeria Personality of the Month, Ibeabuchi Ananaba (Ibe) a talented artist and Fashion Illustrator whose work, we believe, will “wow” you just like it did us.

Ibe, we think, might just be one of the new and leading crop of fashion illustrators who will help strengthen and further Nigeria’s fashion and design industry with his talent and skills. Let’s meet him, shall we! Also be sure to catch him and his work in person at the Goethe Institute in Lagos on October 10th, 2009.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Hi Ibe, it is nice to finally make this interview happen. Your work has been so impressive but we never could quite seem to connect to make this happen. How are you?
Ibeabuchi Ananaba (Ibe): Wow . . .I am fine. A big thanks for asking and I’m also happy we finally made this happen.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Many, even within Nigeria (Naija), do not know who you are. Would you please introduce yourself?
Ibe: (laughs) My name is Ibeabuchi Ananaba. I’m from Obegu, Ugwunagbor L.G.A -Abia State. I was (born in Belgium and raised) in Aba but I am now based in Lagos. I am a Fine and Applied Arts Graduate of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (1999 set). I majored in Painting. My hobbies are listening to music, enjoying jokes and sketching.

I grew up with the ambition to touch lives with my creativity and the ambition still remains the same. While many, even within Nigeria, might not know me now but I know that things evolve. With time, things will unfold and like FAZE (a popular Nigerian music artist) sang – “One day dem go holla my name”!

Ladybrille®Nigeria: (laughs) Good choice of artist to quote. FAZE is actually one of my all time favorite artist out of Naija. Indeed “One day dem go holla (your) name” if you keep up the quality work. We will talk a bit more about your artwork in general but first, you do fashion illustrations. Where did your interest in fashion come from?
Ibe: (It) comes from my appreciation of nature and the human form. I love figures a lot. The human structure is amazingly dynamic. It has every flow and rhythm you enjoy when listening to your best music. It is so complete that God had to make out time to create it last. That said, I have always had the zeal to create designs that would enhance or compliment the human form. As time went on, I developed interest in flipping through magazines and appreciating fashion trends, styles and illustrations.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Okay Let’s talk more about your art work. I know there are a few galleries here and there within Nigerian but paint the picture for us in terms of the state of art in Nigeria?
Ibe: The state of art in Nigeria, in my view, is like a flower yet to bloom. People are beginning to appreciate things and getting to open their minds to ideas. If you look at some locally made music videos, you’ll appreciate the new breeze. Somehow it might seem cheap but then the fact that one realizes he/she has to make a mark or even dare to attempt is a pointer to sunny days. Beyond the visual arts, the music industry is growing as well as the movie industry. Together they help uplift our image but then I think the need for the government to see the potential and give a heavy support is crucial.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Outside the country it is hard for artist to make money and that is even in societies where art is really appreciated. “How you take manage for Naija?”
Ibe: (laughs) In as much as “man mus’ wack,” I deeply do this for the love. With this in mind, I got myself a job. I work as a Senior Art Director at an advertising agency here in Naija called Insight Communications Limited. It is a job that always task the brain and gives you room to create. It has helped expand my mind and opens a window for me to get a grasp of how the human mind could be influenced by what we think . . .
There is this feel good (feeling) when you realize you are part of a ground-breaking campaign that everyone talks about, or at least you witnessed one or can understand the process.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Back to fashion. Within the context of fashion in Nigeria, you don’t per se hear about sketches as much as you do in the West. Have you thought about collaborating with Nigerian designers who maybe are not as gifted in fashion sketching to help them really capture their imaginative designs on paper?
Ibe: I have had that within me ever since but I’m yet to meet a designer I can connect with so we can shake the world. Although times are changing, I notice a lot of things within the fashion industry is picking up. There is more energy and vitality now on the street level but I know there is always room for (improvement). You just have to notice that gap and fill it or else one goes irrelevant.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Where do you see Nigeria’s art world going?
Ibe: It is moving forward despite the many challenges. There is hope. There’s a new Naija awakening in various aspects including the arts. From performing art to visual arts, there’s a shift that’s favoring a lot of people down here. Awareness is gradually growing.

We’ve witnessed big art events like ARESUVA and ART EXPO twice here in Nigeria. They might not have met or equaled the standards (in the West) but the fact is that something new is happening and it’s begun to revive lost hopes and encourage upcoming artists. Big brands are beginning to realize the vital role art plays in the communities they operate in, so it has opened a new channel for the business of art to flourish.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: What galleries would you recommend we check out to see some pure talent?
Ibe: Some virtual galleries like www.lineguage.com, www.seekproject.com and a whole lot of others are there to visit. One of the cutest new galleries I discovered is Artistic Liscence at Muri Okunola Street, Victoria Island. Terra Kulture is another cool place. YabaTech Art Department, AFA gallery, Quintessence Gallery, Mydrim gallery,Omenka Gallery,Nike gallery and more within Lagos. There are also (many) galleries across Nigeria with some great hidden talents although most galleries are concentrated here in Lagos.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Where are some of the hangout spots for up and coming artists and art lovers looking to be inspired?
Ibe: Terra Kulture, Center for Contemporary Arts, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos, Universal Studios at National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, Kelechi Amadi-obi Studio, Photo, Garage and a whole lot of places in Lagos.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: Are you teaching or offering any art courses in Nigeria?
Ibe: Not yet, perhaps one day it will happen.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: What are some of your upcoming art projects?
Ibe: At the moment, I have an upcoming art exhibition at Goethe-Institute Lagos titled AGAINST ALL ODDS. It is an art exhibition of my ballpoint pen drawings. I call it an epistle from me to the public advocating for HOPE. I want to use it as a pulling force to draw people together aiming to stir up a paradigm shift. I also have an incomplete fashion art project titled SELENSE. “Selense” is a slang I heard while growing up to mean “show-off” or “to flaunt.” It is a project that celebrates the fashion sense of today’s contemporary chic woman, irrespective of race and geographical location.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: We are still getting our minds around the creative arts in terms of presenting and preserving the culture in a way that is appreciated. Any suggestions on how the country can preserve our rich arts and culture?
Ibe: My suggestion would be foundational. It has to start from the grass-root level. It has to start from the school curriculum. The awareness and appreciation needs to be taught and emphasized from a tender age. People need to be well informed so they can function with a liberated mindset. Art in my days in school was mostly misinterpreted. Art goes way beyond what people think it is. Art transcends entertainment and ranges from informative to educative and even therapeutic. Art, one way or the other, influences our way of thinking, living and behavioral patterns which makes up our culture. It explains and shows our heritage and identity.

Living a well balanced life also would help in preserving our artistic culture. Some term it as a waste to take time from the daily crazy hustle to explore art while some don’t realize its essence. Some know how to travel far to appreciate a sight seeing while some fail to see the need. A balanced lifestyle helps open and equip the mind on how to preserve what is yours.

I also think strong campaigns that reinforce the essence and importance of our artistic culture and the need to preserve them are also very important, campaigns which reach the masses through different media that grabs people’s attention. Other programs like trainings could help out too.

Ladybrille®Nigeria: (Well said). Our final question for you. Who are the “must know” Nigerian artists within and outside the country?
Ibe: Within Nigeria names like Kelechi Amadi Obi , Henry Morkah, Ugo Ananaba, Uche Iroha, Enyinnaya Ihediwa, Chima Etu, Chamberlin Ukenedo, Rom Isichei, Kainebi Osahenye, Edosa Oguigo, Segun Adejumo, Ben Osaghae and Nsikak Essien. Outside Nigeria names like Okey Iwundu, Onyeka Ibe, Ugochukwu Smooth-Nzewi, Bright Eke, Pita Ohiwerei, Olu Amoda and Iheanyi Ihediwa are all names to know.
Joan Okorodudu, the brain behind the rising agency has a portfolio that reads like no other. She is a fashion designer, entrepreneur, ex-beauty queen, cosmetologist, former athlete and psychiatrist. This September Okorodudu, along with other top Nigerian designers, will showcase her latest designs at Couture Fashion Week while her models will strut the runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Her dedication, passion and drive to put the budding Nigerian fashion industry on the global fashion map earns her Ladybrille®Nigeria Personality of the Month for September, 2009. In this interview, she talks passionately about her fashion businesses, models and her determination to succeed!

LadybrilleNigeria: You are well known in Africa’s fashion industry, particularly in Nigeria and South Africa (SA) but could you briefly tell our readers more about yourself. Who is Joan Okorodudu?
Joan Okorodudu: I was born on October 28, 1958, making me 51 this October. I am the first daughter of Chief Morgan Elumelu of Onicha Olona. I graduated from the prestigious Boston University in Massachusetts with a degree in political science. As you already know, I am the owner of ISIS Models Johannesburg (ISISmodels.org), which has become the leading modeling agency for young black girls in Africa as evidenced by the number of jobs that we do, especially at any Fashion Week in Africa. I created Nigeria’s Next Super Model (nigeriasnextsupermodel.com). I have been married for 27 years and I have a son.

LadybrilleNigeria: How did you get started in the fashion industry?
Joan Okorodudu: I have been in the fashion industry since 1991 when I opened my first shop “Euro Afrique” in Wilmington, Delaware. I eventually came back to Nigeria and started other businesses. In April 2007, I launched my first collection in Nigeria and named it the House of j’OLA. The name is a combination of my name and my husband’s name. Jo comes from my name and ola from “Tsola,” my husband’s name.

LadybrilleNigeria: How was the ISIS Models concept conceived?
Joan Okorodudu: Believe it or not ISIS was conceived out of desperation. I wanted an agency my models could be signed to after Nigeria’s Next Super Model just like it is done in other model competitions around the world. I was interested in having my models signed to a particular agency that has a lot of black models. We went back and forth on email, I went to South Africa and had meetings, and made so many calls and it was like I was begging them to take a good product.

I approached a second agency and the same thing happened. So I flew my girls to Johannesburg on a fact finding trip during South Africa Fashion Week. It was there we met the owner of an agency and he asked “who are these girls?” I explained that these were the girls that we were supposed to send to them and he was like “wow I need you to go to my office, we need to talk.” I knew then that we had good sets of models and they deserved to be seen. On our way to the agency I looked at my girls and my manager and said, “let us go and set up our own agency.”

After debating over a few names, we decided to name it ISIS Models. ISIS is from my name, Isioma. That was the beginning of this great journey. So far I have booked models for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Couture Fashion Week, Island of the World Bahamas, Berlin Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. My model, Olubunmi Ademokoya won best model of the world and best national costume 2007, and has already walked the runway in New York, Paris, Cape Town, Durban, Sanlam, Arise Cape Town, and Arise Joburg. She has modeled for reputable designers like Dany Atrache, David Tlale, Andre Aquino, and Elie Saab.

LadybrilleNigeria: What has made ISIS Models so successful within the short period of time it has been around?
Joan Okorodudu: It has been tough determination and God. We have been discriminated against in so many ways but that’s for another interview.

LadybrilleNigeria: What is the next big move for the agency? By that I mean, what other world-class fashion events would you like to participate in?
Joan Okorodudu: We have done Paris and everywhere. I would like to do Brazil Fashion Week and of course start ISIS model search world wide

LadybrilleNigeria: In every business, obstacles are ever-present, what is the toughest challenge you have faced so far?
Joan Okorodudu: The toughest challenge is that of discrimination against Nigerian models. For instance, considering that Nigerian models are top in South Africa, during the Arise show Nigerians were given less opportunities. It was painful because Arise is practically Nigerian. We also have seen how other models are flown from all over to do Arise shows and when you see the models they bring they are not as good as the Nigerians.

Bunmi Ademokoya was booked for Arise New York Fashion Week, she went for casting with my other models and she was picked. She went and fitted for Tiffany Amber and it was a shock when she and Agbani Darego were dropped from the show. No other group of people will allow their own people to be treated that way. I don’t see why Nigeria’s “Miss World” and the winner of “Best Model of the World” can be dropped for other models especially for shows that are (produced) by a Nigerian. It is our biggest obstacle. (Nigerian) models are demoralized and it is affecting them.

LadybrilleNigeria: When you scout for a model, what specific qualities do you look for? What is the thought process in selecting a new model? Do you envision a particular designer or a particular product?
Joan Okorodudu: I look for girls with very distinct features like good high cheek bones and a very lean look, especially if they have to do shows worldwide. You have to be a size 6 maximum.

LadybrilleNigeria: What makes African models distinctive from models from other parts of the world?
Joan Okorodudu: The models from Africa are very stunning. Their skin is their best assets. The dark ones and the light ones all have their unique assets.

LadybrilleNigeria: Who are your top female models at the moment?
Joan Okorodudu: Olubunmi Ademokoya, Amaka Chira, Isi Atagamen, Cynthia Omorodion, Tinuade Adejokun, Eno Akpan, Tayo Ishola , Faith Amadi, Omoye Eromosele, and Uzodinma. I have some Russians who will be joining ISIS soon. We are looking at making ISIS an international brand.

LadybrilleNigeria: What is the driving force behind your passion for the modeling industry?
Joan Okorodudu: My passion is driven by the fact that I was once a model and I will continue to do this forever.

LadybrilleNigeria: There’s an on-going trend of talented Nigerian models migrating to South Africa (SA) and other parts of the world to pursue their career. According to critics, this trend is hampering the development of the Nigeria’s fashion industry. What is your view on this trend?
Joan Okorodudu: Blame the big corporations in Nigeria that have killed the modeling industry. I want to see reverse migration. I want our industry to do our jobs here so as to allow our models to live in Nigeria. If other corporations can use models like the “Glow Ambassadors” do, we will not have our models leaving Nigeria and getting discriminated against.

Our models from Nigeria are keeping the South African fashion industry going. From Arise Africa Fashion Week to all the adverts, from MTN to Zain, the models are Nigerians. It is very sad.

LadybrilleNigeria: As a Nigerian whose modeling agency is based in SA, in what ways do you think you have impacted Nigeria’s fashion industry?
Joan Okorodudu: I have done well. I have taken girls from this country and now they are globetrotting. I have invested my hard earned money in this venture and I get emails from young girls blessing me. Out of 13 Nigerians that modeled at Arise Africa, 8 were my models. It has been great.

In December, we are starting International Fashion Week in Tinapa, Calabar, to enable young girls and boys to have their own. With that, even when they are in South Africa they can say we have our Fashion Week too. I can tell you that I will rather have our models in Africa than in model houses in America or Europe where they are extorted and not every black model gets booked. What I want to see is models living a better life in Africa than they can ever live in any other part of the world. My models live in the exclusive part of Johannesburg and in a house with swimming pool and gated area.
I have tried and I beg God to help me to do more. Right now we want to focus more on sending winners to Fashion Weeks worldwide instead of just competitions, and so winners of this year’s Nigeria’s Next Super Model will grace New York Fashion Week and South Africa Fashion Week.

LadybrilleNigeria: Apart from ISIS Models, we know about your clothing line: House of j’OLA. Could you familiarize our readers with other enterprises you are involved with?
Joan Okorodudu: I am also the MD/CEO of International Business Consortium Nigerian Limited. I won the econet dealer of the year 2001. I founded Lagos Ageless Clinique (lagosagelessclinique.com). I produce my own cream and soap, Nature’s Enzyme Soap, which has become very popular. I am the creative director of House of j’OLA ( www.houseofjola.com). It is good to note that I was the 3rd leg of the African record holder of the Nigerian team in the 4X400 metres (meter) relay in Stuttgart, Germany 1980. I won the Lady Gator relays three years in a row 1979, 1980, 1981. I was runner up in the prestigious Penn relays in 1980 and an Olympian. I was also Miss Nigeria Kaduna 1981 and first runner up Miss Nigeria 1981.

LadybrilleNigeria: What fun activities do you do to relieve the stress that comes with running multiple businesses?
Joan Okorodudu: I relax by going to Ghana, the Upper Volta region and sometimes just by watching TV.
