Industry Moves: Adaure Achumba Says ‘Bye Bye’ to Silverbird Television

Adaure Achumba Nigeria’s Silverbird TV News anchor, presenter and producer says goodbye to the network she has made home for over three years. Achumba was supposed to work with STV for only two years. Three and a half years later, she had become a main staple in Nigerian households with her shows, ‘Today on STV’ and ‘HotLens.’

True to her nature, however, she ultimately reached a crossroad where she knew it was time to do something else and push herself farther. “I just needed to pull myself away from a comfort zone and get back on the original track,” explained Adaure Achumba to LadybrilleNigeria.

What next for Achumba? The answer seems uncertain. MNET Studio 53 where Achumba was a presenter/reporter has just ended its programming replacing it with “Studio 53 Extra” (think Extra TV) and two pre-selected anchors.

“I’m leaving it to God to decide,” says The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate. For now, the aspiring CNN anchor is content to enjoy travels across Nigeria while she figures her next move!

Liz Yemoja is one woman that keeps flying higher and higher. We reported in our Industry Moves feature November 2009 that the Youtube Naija host was climbing up the entertainment ladder with her new role as MNET’s Channel O/Storm 360′s presenter on the 100% Naija show. Proving that hard work pays, Liz has now inked a deal with Ben TV to air her own self produced and directed show, The Liz Yemoja Show.

The ‘Liz Yemoja Show’ features artists from all genres of the entertainment industry aiming to find out the person behind the artist. There are currently four sections of the Show, the main ‘Liz Yemoja Show’, ‘About 2 Blow’ for up and coming talent ‘Journey to Success’ for successful entrepreneurs. There is also an exciting entertainment Section ‘Celebration’, which features special birthdays, graduations, Hen nights, Batchelor Eves, launch Nights, Christenings etc., The Show will be aired weekly on Ben Television – Sky 184 Saturdays at 5:30pm and will also be repeated sporadically.”

Industry Moves: Wana Udobang Brings Much Needed Spunk to STYLE ME Show

Style ME like its American and British counterparts, ‘What Not to Wear’ has a great concept and offers live changing experiences for its “style victims.” Unlike its foreign counterparts, however, it lacks ethuasiam/”spunk” for lack of a better word and a down to earth feel needed for many of the everyday style victims on its show, at least in its Season 3 episodes so far. Thankfully, the producers have become tuned into this issue and have just added Wana Udobang, a plus size Journalist and Radio personality (Inspiration FM, Lagos), to the SYLE ME team.

A graduate with a First Class degree in Journalism from the University for the Creative Arts in Surrey, UK, Wana brings the much needed spunk and natural flow to the STYLE ME show that was lacking. The result is a show that is as much fun as it is life changing.

“I was a bit nervous about joining the show as I really had no TV presenting experience,” said Wana to LadybrilleNigeria. “But all I could think was, finally a chance to break the sterotype of the kinds of people involved in fashion and on television! Plus it was also a chance to just help people with building confidence from very little changes in their wardrobe,” added Wana.

“It’s so surreal how you would see the style subjects/personalities transform with just a hairstyle, lipgloss and the right clothes. I hope even my being on the show can also shake things up a bit when it comes to african designers and making clothes for the fully figured woman. Most of all I hope that I inject some humor and spice into the show.”

Designer Ituen Bassey owner of Ituen Basi relocated from England to Nigeria only last year, yet she is already making a big impact in the fashion industry! Independent of the Ituen Basi label, Bassey just recently established the Fashion Development Agency (FDA), a fashion production company producing designs for other designers, among its numerous production services.

FDA currently works with sixteen (16) local workers in meeting its production deadlines and plans to expand its roster to include more! For the Ituen Basi label, the brilliant Ituen Bassey anticipates and expansion into men and children’s wear in 2010.

Industry Moves: Chichi Nwoko Named Deputy Director of Marketing at Optima Media Group Nigeria

Nigeria (Naija) if you’ve never heard of Chinwendu Ofor-Nwoko better known as Chichi Nwoko, get ready to meet her! Connecticut based Nwoko prepares to move to Nigeria this year to take the reins as Deputy Director of Marketing at Optima Media Group (OMG). Her new position means she will oversee the company’s global and pan-African marketing initiatives which includes high profile projects in the fashion, sports and entertainment world.

“I am so excited about the oppourtunity to give back my knowledge and expertise to my country and my continent,” said Nwoko to LadybrilleNigeria. “OMG is headquartered in Nigeria and London and some of the projects that I will be (overseeing) include the World Cup in (Nigeria), Idols Africa and Apprentice Africa to name a few.”

Nwoko will also assist OMG in the launch of offices in New York, South Africa, Ghana and Kenya.

Nwoko the daughter of a Nigerian Diplomat father was born in Dublin, Ireland and as a result of her father’s work, has lived in numerous countries including Trinidad and Tobago, The Gambia, Mali and Nigeria before the family’s move to the USA. In 2003, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in African Studies from Columbia University. By 2004, she was already named an “Executive to Watch” by the prestigious National Association of Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment.

Nwoko who is also Co-Publisher of Black Star News, New York’s investigative newspaper, began her broadcast journalism career as a consumer affairs intern with WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C. She has subsequently worked for television networks like WTNH-TV (New Haven, Connecticut), WAVY-TV & WVBT-TV (Portsmouth, Virginia) and WISH-TV (Indianapolis, Indiana).
