For Spring/Summer 2010, Lanvin had lots of ongoing juxtapositions that neatly played off refined yet rebellious elements: tailored yet sleeveless jackets, suits matched with seemingly unkept hair, high waist tapered trousers, jackets worn with shorts, balloon sleeve coats and so much more. The collection was dark, mysterious, sexy and definitely saying, “I have a smooth, sexy refined yet anti-conformist swagger!”

Walmart the largest retail employer in the United States and a company with very active presence in Africa, announced this past week its intent to launch a green labeling system. What this means is Walmart will disclose the environmental impact of the product it sells to consumers. Also, for the 100,000 suppliers of goods to Walmart, they would be required to provide an environmental impact analysis/data if they want to continue to do business with the retail giant.

“At Wal-Mart, we see sustainability as one of the most important opportunities for both the future of our business and the future of our world,” explains Walmart’s official statement on its site.

“Our opportunity is to become a better company by looking at every facet of our business—from the products we offer to the energy we use—through the lens of sustainability.”

Walmart’s sustainability goals: 1) to be supplied by 100 percent renewable energy; 2) create zero waste; and 3) sell sustainable products. For Nigeria and the rest of Africa, there is a huge opportunity for the fashion retail industry to be a part of Walamrt’s sustainability and supplier programs. The challenge is how Nigeria gets past the non-biodegradable plastics and plastic bags across the streets of the big cities, particularly a fashion and entertainment capital like Lagos.
