Fashion among Nigerians is such a wild craze that our very own under 20 coach, John Obu, has caught on to it. His attire on the pitch, as his boys downed England by 1 goal to go on to quarter finals, distracted commentators of all sorts just a little bit, perhaps.

Very few football coaches have shown interest in fashion and it is interesting to see one of our very own carving his own niche in fashion. Sported in white trousers, black and white footwear and a black and a black top with white stripes and the best of all, a perhaps Mexican sombrero hat (Go Naija) which really did stand out, John Obuh told BBC Sport that the hat was given to him by the local governor in Armenia, Nigeria’s base since the start of the tournament.

“I put on the hat as a way of thanking the people of Armenia for their support and kindness during our stay,” said Obuh to BBC.

Apparently our latest “fashionisto” has had a craze with hats of all sorts.

“I love hats and I like them fashionable; I like something different and stylish,” Obuh continued to BBC.

‘He added that a similar hat, made from soft cane and worn in the past by Pope John Paul II and US President Bill Clinton, showcased his style and individuality… He said,“In my job I have to put on the best I can just like people going to church; the football pitch is my church.”’

Honestly, he may have stolen the game from his boys. Here is why:

-He won the man of the match award! (What about his boys?!)
-Some fans tried to make #JohnObuhHatCam a trending topic on Twitter (Again what about his boys?)
-According to BBC, Farayi Mungazi of BBC even got so excited he actually tweeted “Nigerian coach John Obuh wearing the coolest hat you will ever see at a football match!”

Well it is certainly nice to see coaches steal the show once in a while and it’s even better when they’re Nigerian. Football is indeed his church! Now let us wait and see what pops up on Sunday’s match against France. Most certainly a lot of commentators and Nigerians would be on the lookout for what he has to pull off again.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde simply needs no introduction. However, in case you have been hiding under a rock for the past decade, briefly, she is one of Africa/Nollywood’s leading actresses whose work has earned her attention and awards globally.

LadybrilleNigeria.com caught up with the highly sought after celebrity for an exclusive all access granted into her fashion and beauty closet. Consistent with our down to earth Style Star signature features, we chat about everything: her music, film, charity work, hair, makeup, clothes and so much more! Dive in.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: ‘Omosexy, Omo Tee’ (Lol!) You know say me sef if I dey do dis interview, I must to cover everything or else e go be serious wahala for me from our readers and your fans! (Lol!)
Omotola: (Lol). . . There’s one nick name none of you know yet and I ain’t telling . . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Lol!) It’s only a matter of time. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria: From Oprah to Tyra to Wendy Williams and many Oyinbo celebs in between, everyone is keeping it very real on how they stay fly; and after Chris Rock’s ‘Good Hair’ we are all just having a good laugh on everything black women go through to stay beautiful. (Lol!). So, we intend to have a true girlfriend chat about your hair, makeup, skin, shoes, bags, clothes your music “ati gbo gbo.” (Lol!)
Omotola: I know right? With a (hectic) schedule, it’s quite hard but its an unforgivable necessity: 1. I have the most stubborn hair ever. It won’t relax. . . (Lol!) So I fix weaves often. However, I use Ellin Lavar and Motion products.
2. Make up: I love to keep it simple, but I’m a rocker and love edgy makeup i.e. smoky eyes. I use Maybelline and Mac eyeshadows,
Super cover/mac studio fix concealers and Victoria Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss.
3. Shoes, bags, clothes and all depends on what I need. . . they could come from anywhere.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Abeg consider dat one as teaser. We will dissect all that. Right now, make yourself comfortable, kick off your cyber shoes and let’s get into it! (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: First how are you and your family, your kids?
Omotola:Oh we are all great. Thanks.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I know you’ve been actively promoting several of your upcoming films but let’s talk specifically about the roles we are not used to seeing you and most Nollywood celebrities in. You are fast becoming the poster face for a Nollywood celebrity that is quite involved with numerous charities. Tell us a bit about your charity work?
Omotola: It’s been a wonderful journey since 2005. I started to work on my NGO called YEP now OYEP(Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme). I also work with the UNWFP (World Food Programme) and have been a UN Ambassador since 2007. I work with children and women on food and relief.

Sometime in 2007/2008 as well, I worked with ‘Save the Children’ in a campaign called ‘Re-write the Future’ in London. This year(2009) saw me working with Amnesty International on a campaign against ‘Maternal Mortality,’ (bringing an end to women dying during the process of childbearing). Sierra-Leone was chosen because it has one of the highest rates! The Campaign continues so we need as much support as possible. Please go to www.amnestyinternational.org. On World Aids day, I was at the UN New York Headquarters to contribute as a UN ambassador and spokesperson also for SACAIDS.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Impressive and highly critical work that affects our women and children. Another role most are not accustomed to seeing you in is, Omotola the musician. When an actor crosses over to do music or vice versa, whether in Hollywood or Nollywood, there is a healthy dose of skepticism. Why music for you? Why now?
Omotola: Music I love. . . (Lol) . . . REALLY. . . and it’s here to stay! Now, is the appointed time. . . (Lol)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol) You sound like a preacher with “Now is the appointed time.” (LoI!) On a more serious note, personally, I feel you can actually hold your own when it comes to music. I liked ‘Feel Alright’ as a song BUT girlfriend kiloshele (what happened) with the video? It took your upgraded style and personal brand to . . . I don’t even know what to call it!! (LOL!) What were you trying to achieve conceptually with the video?
Omotola: Okay, THAT IS NOT THE OFFICIAL VIDEO. . . that was a test from a video director in Hollywood who fell in love with the song, like everyone else. His name is Ron and as we all know now, it didn’t come out well. Problem is? HOW DID IT LEAK?

If you recall my first album, a video was shot for one of my songs called “Dance.” Despite all these setbacks am moving on. . . THE VIDEO FOR FEEL ALRIGHT IS NOT OUT YET.”

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Good to know because that was a no no). So, tell us a bit about what to expect with your future music projects, including your music videos?
Omotola: I’m working on bringing out befitting videos that should make myself and fans proud. The future of my Music is very bright.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Ami (amen). Do you have a current album out in the marketplace? Where can we listen and/or purchase?
Omotola: The next album is ready. However, the release date has been moved to 2010. Ladybrille, you will definitely be informed about proceedings as they unfold. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Cool we will wait. Let’s make a brief stop to your work in Nollywood. First, how have you managed to stay relevant in an industry where fresh faces and strong talent emerge everyday?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . God is Good.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: The current sentiments are that Nollywood is losing its place in African film production and Gollywood is “taking over.” I am not sure I understand these sentiments . . .
Omotola: Nollywood is definitely the leader in African movies however, the Ghanaians are fast learners. They know our weaknesses and are trying to come through with that. Smart move, Nollywood hopefully is seeing this and would keep inspiring. Kudos to them for being good students but we remain the Masters. (LOL!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okedoke! Alright are you ready to pull the make up bag and open your fashion closet so we can raid it? (Lol!)
Omotola: Please with all pleasure. Leave your check book behind though.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Check kini? Ahn ahn sista which one you dey? Lol!
Okay. So, I remember searching quite hard for Nollywood fashion films, films with strong story lines, acting and costumes. I was so frustrated that I couldn’t find any until I saw Queen of Aso Rock. It was an answer to my Nollywood fashion craving at the time. The fashions you wore in that film were brilliant. Who was responsible for all the styles you rocked in Queen of Aso
Rock?
Omotola: Waoh, thanks…will you believe this? Till date, that has been the only movie the financier bought the idea of me costuming my character. I costumed myself with the help of my designer winner’s couture.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: One of the things I have watched you do, especially in the past three years, is literally grab the bull by the horns and take charge of your personal brand (your style and public image). You really have put the “SEXY” in ‘Omosexy.’ (Lol!) You have also CONSISTENTLY maintained it in a very chic, regal way. When did you get your ‘aha’ moment like Oprah would say to take charge of your image and style?
Omotola: (LOL!) . . .Since I started having kids, 1997, the votes were not on my side as I was the new darling of everyone after winning my awards for ‘Mortal Inheritance’ and everyone wanted to meet the new girl on the block (esp. the dudes) only to find out I just got married and just had a kid. Prior to this time being married was bad enough ,being a mum? End of career! You’d be relegated to motherly roles. I was told I’d loose all my fans. Even though it’s been a challenge, I was not going to give up on me. I needed to make it known it’s possible to be a mum and still be hot!

LADYBRILLENigeria: The verdict is in. You have made it known indeed and that is why we are here with this Style feature of you! Let’s talk about your skin. That is also part of the change I have noticed. Your skin just dey glow like say you discover the fountain of youthful smooth silky skin. (Lol!) Share with us the steps you took to your healthy glowing skin?
Omotola: Thanks. I’m happier and more relaxed. I have body scrubs every 3 to 4 weeks. I moisturize, pray and drink lots of water.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Speaking of moisturizing, what are some of the current facial products you use?
Omotola: ‘Clean and Clear’ everything for my face. . . (Lol!) Deep clean Neutrogena wipes, and Timeless Secret Night and Pure
Radiance Day spf20 uva/uvb.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Hmmmmm . . . .do you exfoliate often?
Omotola: Yes. Once a week to prevent over drying although I have very oily skin. I use Dermalogica products.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What’s your typical beauty regime?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . I go to the spa once a month and get a body scrub and deep tissue massage. On my own, I wash off makeup every night, apply a clean and clear Persa-Gel 10 to take care of spots, Timeless Secret Night treatment to sort out all day’s abuses. . .(Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) Abuse ke? How many cups of water do you drink in a day?
Omotola: Recommended is 8 glasses sometimes I fall short of a glass or two but I’m working towards consistency.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) I am just trying to find the beauty tips for our readers and of course your fans o! So more questions. (Lol!)
Omotola: My pleasure. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What foundation do you use?
Omotola: Dermablend or Supercover Foundations and Mac studio fix concealer.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about makeup (lipsticks, eye shadow etc)?
Omotola: Not a lipstick fan but if I must, MK Sinature in Red Salsa or Mono in Musty Muave.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Another major upgrade has been your hair mama! (Lol!) We are all loving every look you are rocking. Your current seemingly luscious long curly locks are to die for! Is that Indian hair you are using?
Omotola: (Lol!) . . . You are so funny. It’s Brazilian, regrettably. . . .(Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) What’s your favorite weave to rock. Brazilian or Indian weaves?
Omotola: I have both, but my stylists thinks the Brazilian suits me more. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see a lot of stars doing the invisible hair line weaves the way Beyonce does it and it is so obvious. Have you ever had that done?
Omotola: You mean like Omotola does it? (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! I guess so Madam. (Lol!) Is Bobby’s Signature also responsible for making your hair look as fly as it has been
lately?
Omotola: I worked with him in the past but not now, its UGO CEO of MAKE ME and on the road I work with Tonnie.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How do you keep your locks looking fresh and shimmering?
Omotola: I use Ellin Lavar instant shine enhancing & frizz fighting mist with moisturizing Cupuacu, it helps the scalp too.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! I can’t even say “Cupuacu.” Pele (sorry) sister. I told you we would take your style apart. (Lol!) Everyone wants to know so this is where I am really just doing my job. (Lol!)
Omotola: Your doing a good one too . . . your bill’s mounting.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) Send the invoice to my accountant. (Lol!) Let’s transition to your clothes. Your selections on the red carpet have been really impressive lately. Your selection to the ‘Mind Game’ Premiere was just dazzling, the jersey gray dress that just draped so well and seemed to move so fluidly on you. Who designed that?
Omotola: It was desined by an Itallian designer, Robert Rodriguez, thanks. The one worn to IJE’s premiere was by Zizi cardow(Nigeria).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Given you have curves, what are your three rules for ladies with curves when it comes to shopping for clothes that will flatter their curves?
Omotola: For women with shapes like Beyonce, Jennifer lopez, Omotola and Kim Kardashian, they should:
1. Pick clothes that define the waist i.e wraps, belts e.t.c
2.Depending on if you are busty or not, pick clothes that give a good support, cleavage or broad shoulders.
3. Dont forget to check out the rear in the dressing room, that’s the highlight isn’t it?

What I’ve learnt? Concentrate on a part at a time it’s less fuzzy, above the waist or below the waist…Most of all,
walk tall, beautiful woman!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Well said. Accessories! Where do you shop for them and what are your rules on accessories?
Omotola: Anywhere and everywhere. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I have noticed you are striking some fierce poses on the red carpet o! No be small ting. (Lol!) Tell us your favorite ‘Omo Sexy, Omo Tee’ red carpet pose.
Omotola: Some into the camera fierce look, to be sincere, I’m trying to change that . . . Lol! . . . it’s so 2008.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! on “It’s so 2008” (Lol!) Four kids later and you are setting the example of how not to give up on self to millions of women who juggle wife, mommmyhood and a demanding career. Beyond your job, what pushes you to take care of self?
Omotola: My God told me I can be whoever I want to be. I believed and I have seen. . . it’s real, he’s real.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When history is written about Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, what is the one thing you hope history writes about you?
Omotola: THE UNBEATABLE.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If you weren’t singing and acting or you are doing these and have the chance to open a fashion business, what kind of fashion business would you open?
Omotola: (LOL)…KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED…

LADYBRILENigeria.com: Okay they are crossed! What is your favorite and highly recommended restaurant in Nigeria to eat, especially for ‘Nigericans and Jand’ folks who will be visiting this December?
Omotola: Jade’s palace, Issac john, G.R.A , if you love Chinese and Sweet Sensation for all African and Contemporary.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where do you shop for your shoes within Naija?
Omotola: Mostly exquisite, Awolowo, Ikoyi.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Tell us your favorite perfume?
Omotola: Flower by keno, Burberry Red or Mauboussin. . .depending on my mood.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where in Naija is a good place to get your nails
done?
Omotola: My house with my Nail attendant, PAT.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: PAT, watch the line form for your services at Omotola’s place. (Lol!) Do you have a favorite
Nigerian designer?
Omotola: Depending on their work per season. I’m very choosy because of my body shape and image. Very few designers are adventurous. Used to love MAYA she made most of my gowns (since she’s left the country), so far, I’m loving me some ZIZI CARDOW.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Zizi is definitely adventurous. Our last question for you, for anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing, etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together i.e. stylish?
Omotola: HIRE A STYLIST, trust me it’s worth it eventually. .. (Lol!) I should know. After a while you get it and can navigate on your own. . . hopefully. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria: (Lol) Pele Omotola. This is basically the longest Style Star we have
done but we truly wanted to leave our audience satisfied with their numerous style questions for and about you. (Lol!)
Omotola: Oh my gosh, I’m tired oh. . . there’s nothing left for my Autobiography!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Ya got jokes. Lol! Alright we don basically cyber raid your closet finish so it is only appropriate we say ‘Ose gan’ lol! Thanks for letting us visit. (Lol!) We applaud your contribution to Naija’s fashion industry. Because of you, even more Naija sistas will be looking fly. Ose gan!
Omotola: . . . Thanks for your love and noticing . . .(Lol!) . . . now get out of my closet, will ya, while I recuperate . . . I need my
beauty sleep. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Lol! Ouch!
One word that best describes Cleopatra Adedeji aka Naira’s style? Funky! Naira which stands for Nigerian American I represent Africa since her debut on the music scene has always had a way of staying stylish yet accessible to the average African-American/African girl in the West. We caught up with the very busy always “hustling” artist to talk style!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your style sense?
NAIRA: Six Letters… Spunky! At times, I am quite moody and of course it spills over into my music as well as my attire. I do on the other hand, dwell in the arena of sexy meets elegant.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What do you think your style says about your personality?
NAIRA: It definitely shows how fun, inventive, and/or spontaneous I can be. Tomorrow, I may have an entirely different look the next day just for the heck of it.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What’s your favorite music video to date that you feel truly showed your style sense?
NAIRA: Uwwwwwww a tough tough question! I’d be a tie between Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop” (That Thing) and Keri Hilson’s “Knock You Down” video. I dug the colors and the looks from the “Worldwide the Remix” video as well. Fun and spunkyness!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I love the way you put your outfits together. It is always fresh, young and avant garde. Where do you get that from?
NAIRA: My mom was a designer and boutique owner for most of my life and because of that, I was inspired by her sense of style and color selection. I’d watch her and the way people responded to her method and admired it. Because of her, I’m into mixing different colors, fabrics, lengths, and more. There’s always something about what I’m wearing that is odd (big or small)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If you were not a musician or you still are and decide to branch into the world of design, what would you be designing?
NAIRA: More than likely clothes and accessories (bags, ties, belts, sunglasses etc)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Who is your favorite Nigerian designer and why?
NAIRA: Bukky Are of House of Versatile Styles. Her designs are innovatively sexy, while others are fun, urban, or edgy. She’s dope! Definitely a versatile design for a very versatile artist.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Tell us your favorite stylish store in the USA to shop?
NAIRA: I frequent boutiques mostly I’m not a big fan of huge stores chock full of clothes. My favs would definitely be Controversy Boutique, Bombay Gal, Bill Hallman, and Cherry Bomb every once in a while. I love sneakers as well so Jimmy Jazz or DTLR for those. Big up all the tailors, seamstresses, and stylist that are out there. I loves ya!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You haven’t been to Nigeria lately, correct?
NAIRA:That would be correct! It’s been a long while…

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What is your favorite Nigerian restaurant in the USA in terms of great food, decor and service to eat?
NAIRA: Buka Lounge in Stone Mountain is definitely my fav. Everyone goes there for the awesome food! You haven’t been to ATL until you’ve gone to see Babs and Buka Lounge. C’est Bon.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about your favorite hangout stylish spot?
NAIRA: The studio. (Lol!) . . . Castleberry District has been our current hanging garden lately

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol! You stay hustling) Give us three of your favorite beauty tips?
NAIRA: Be sure to have a pair of dope sunglasses, lip gloss, and drink loads of water for a clear skin.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: For anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing, etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together i.e. stylish?
NAIRA: As long as you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing you will exude confidence. What is style other than confidence?

Dola Billz (Dola) has a deeply passionate and almost restless energy about him, an energy that is at once rebellious as it is creative. This energy insists on being free to communicate his ideas and creativity ranging from political to just plain pop culture, to the world. Indeed Dola’s need to freely express himself to the world permeates every aspect of his life including his style sense. Dola’s style sense is as intriguing as his creative music videos (most of which he directs and styles), numerous tattoos, the ring he occasionally wears on his lips and his overall personality.

Born Mayowa Dolapo Bello in the United Kingdom (UK) South East London, Dola spent time in his youth between Nigeria and London. He attended Geofrey Chauncer Primary School Bermondsey, had a little stint at Apata High School in Isolo, Lagos until his refusal to follow school rules got him kicked out of Apata. Yes we all know that guy or girl, growing up, that got suspended or expelled from school. Dola was, however, not one of those “bad apples” that would never find his way. In fact, he later completed high school (Secondary School) at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo and in 1999 returned to the UK for what he explained to LadybrilleNigeria was “for more life opportunities, University and generally for a change”

The UK indeed provided Dola Billz more life opportunities, focus and a change, a huge outlet for his creative and arguably anti-conformist style and energy. In 2005, Dola completed college receiving his degree in Business Economics and Marketing from the University of Dundee. Today, he is the CEO of his own independent record label called 166 Family Records. Dola who has been spending years in the “music trenches” so to speak building and refining his skills, is now en route to Lagos to lay his claim to a piece of the Nigerian music industry pie; with some of his musical works that are fast becoming hits. Songs like “Pu’Yanga,” “Sing 4 Me” and the really creative “Jembe” music video directed and styled by Dola are already causing consternation in the UK and on social media networks like You Tube.

We were impressed with Dola’s style sense which, for us, can best be described as a convergence of the styles of Lenny Kravitz, 50cents and Kanye West to produce a unique Dola Billz signature style complete with layered meanings, we knew he had to be one of our features on LadybrilleNigeria Style Star. Get to know Dola Billz our “Pu Yanga” LadybrilleNigeria Style Star.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Mr. Dola Billz aka Pu’Yanga. How you dey?
Dola Billz: I just dey like dey dey Miss, how are you?

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I am fine. Thanks for asking.) Before we really get into your style, let’s talk a bit about your music background. First, how did the Dola Billz name come about?
Dola Billz: I get called “Dola” by my family, and the “Billz” is as simple as the fact that bills always come so one needs to make some P’z (money) in order to sort ‘em out.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I hear you on making the P’z. How long have you been making music?
Dola Billz: As far back as I can remember. I used to mime songs with Tilla (friend, musician and member of 166 Record Family) in High School, but I only started recording music in 2005 after I graduated (University).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Why did you start the 166 company?
Dola Billz: I believe in my creative edge so I wanted to start an Independent Label to keep my creativity and sound the way I want, as well as being able to give other people the opportunity to do their thing as well.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: “Sing 4 Me.” The beats on that is sick! Who is the producer?
Dola Billz: Yung-Kurt. He is my compatriot and like my younger brother but also a sick producer.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You are about to do the Pu’Yanga promo in Naija but let us know what Pu’ Yanga means and how to get our Pu’Yanga on?
Dola Billz: Pu’Yanga simply means “Put Yanga.” We just slanged it because we wanted to write it out the way we would say it (Tilla’s idea). I gather “Yanga” is an Hausa word for “pose.” So together it means “throw a pose,” just feel free to put some flair into whatever you are doing and that’s how you F’akosi (put yanga into it) . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Got it. Back to the 166 name. What does that stand for?
Dola Billz: 166 Chiltern Estate Portland Street is my best friend’s Flat (apartment) that I moved back to at the start of January 2006. [I]t’s where my music making became very serious, it’s also the place where every other member of the 166 family used to come chill out, make music and hang-out.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Wow! To see it all come together, very cool! Dola, let’s get into your style. You know I look at your style and see so much you are communicating. I see political statements (The tee-shirt with the person dumping the swastika in the garbage can), restlessness, funk, hip-hop, rock n roll, preppy/conservative, razzness “ati gbo gbo e” (and everything). It’s like you’ve got so many personalities all lumped in one body. How would you describe yourself?
Dola Billz: Someone that you can’t put in a box. So like you said, I am a man of different personalities that doesn’t wanna be perceived in one way or the other. Thanks for noticing that tee-shirt. I was thinking about how I can make an anti-racist statement with just a glance, and a coca-cola can was where I got the idea from (the symbol bin it) got changed to Bin-racism in one glance, without having to be vocal. I must say I am very political because I tattooed “Make Poverty History” on my back as well. I went to the G8 Summit in Edinburgh.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (I could glean that from observing you and your style). I also noticed the tattoos on your neck and arms. What do they mean and why did you get them?
Dola Billz: All my tattoos have a significant meaning to me. The musical notes on my neck are followed by my signature which signifies when 166 family got registered as a label. In a nut-shell it makes me feel like I am signed to my music. I also have a 1960s mic tattooed on my arm, an ace of spades, and some words from one of the most intense tracks I have ever written called “Time.” You can kinda figure out what all that stands for. My back is covered in tattoos but I am sure you don’t want me to keep going on.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (LOL! No, because it would become a LadybrilleNigeria Tattoo Style Star Feature. Not exactly what we planned. Lol!) For many who might never have heard of you who is Dola Billz and what is the Dola Blilz brand about?
Dola Billz: Dola Billz is about expressing myself in my own style to the world in (m)usical, visual, and artistic ways, and hope people like and can relate to my Dola way of doing things.

LADYBRILLENigeria: Let’s talk about your “Dola way of doing things.” I know you have heard “Swag” or “Swagger so much in the music biz. How are you positioning yourself to be more about the music than the “Swag” or a healthy balance of both?
Dola Billz: I completely agree with you that the word Swag has been out-played so I don’t tend to use it, and it is a conscious decision to make myself more about my music than what people perceive as swag. But, if people say I’ve got swagger then I simply say “thank you” and get on with it.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You are in Dubai now on your way to Naija soon. How is Dubai? What hot spots have you checked out?
Dola Billz: Dubai is an amazing place, and I reckon everyone should come here at least once. The spots I have checked out are JBR, Cavali bar, Budha Bar, bike riding in the desert, and going shopping in the Dubai mall. . .there are a lot of malls I must add so if you enjoy shopping Dubai is the place to be.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Awesome! I am sure our readers would love that bit of information!) Having said there is an overuse of “Swag” and it is “wahala,” allow me to still use it here because it applies. (Lol!) You get swag. You really do. (Lol!) By the way, “whassup” with the Isolo and Mushin shout outs you keep giving? (Lol!) “Whatcha” know about Isolo or Mushin for that matter? (Lol!) I was (also) cracking up when I heard you do a shoutout to Okota. (Lol)! It is nice.
Dola Billz: Thanks Miss (on) the swag thing and trust me I know every thing I need to know about Isolo, Mushin, Ejigbo all the way to Ikotun. (Smiles) Basically my grand-dad’s house is in Balogun in Mushin. We live in Ire-Akari Estate in Isolo and my dad’s older brother’s house is in Okota. If you know the geography of these places you will know that they all lead to the other and I grew up in all these places, so every time I am in Naija, I can spend any night in any of these places. They are all home. As to Okota, of course. I spent a lot of time in DT in Okota, got suspended from Apata High school in Okota and Da Boss Yusuf (my cousin) stays in Okota so that’s where I tend to stay when [I] am in Lagos.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I grew up first in Ikeja and then Ejigbo went to school in Isolo so very familiar with the area. I used to hear those Danfo drivers and Molue conductors yell destinations. I no remember Okota, although I know where Okota dey. So Okota get swag now? Na wa. (Lol!) I had friends who attended Apata and yes I do know Ire-Akari Estate well well.(Lol!) Way to put Isolo, Mushin and the rest on the music map!)

Let’s get into style. I saw you styled the “Sing4Me” video. Is that accurate? Did you style yourself and Saffie? The interior decor?
Dola Billz: Yes I styled the “Sing4me” shoot,” me and my very close associate Esther Areola styled Saffie and the rest of the models. I (also) styled the shoot itself in terms of myself and the decor, which I was very hands-on with because I figure it had to portray a complete visual that I had in my head, so all the decor was pre-1960.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Kudos and highly impressive. Do your other side hustles include styling or it was just for the video?
Dola Billz: Right now, I style my own projects. For example, I styled Yung-Kurt’s “Jembe” video which I directed as well but I think some Naija artist’s can do with my styling help. It would just give them a better visual look I reckon, so you can pass on my number and we’ll arrange a fee . . . I lie?

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (You no lie. Lol!) Still on the Sing4Me video, what were you thinking conceptually when it came to styling for Sing 4 me?
Dola Billz: I thought I’d make it look like a old school movie, so in other words, I can get away all the other scenes like the underground which I used to incorporate light horror.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your personal style?
Dola Billz: All-over the place . . . and not easily duplicated. I simply wear anything that I think looks good on me and reflects how I am feeling.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What influences your style?
Dola Billz: I travel a lot, around Europe. I live in London which I feel is the fashion capital of the world. I don’t limit myself to a certain look and I like to experiment with clothes. I am also a market boy and I don’t necessarily have to rock a designer garment just because it’s a brand. Basically I throw things on without being too serious about my actual look, and if it looks good then am out. It’s as simple as that.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: “Efere bodi dey” rock Mohawk these days. You also are rocking your own Mohawk. What’s up with that?
Dola Billz: Point of correction I rock a Dola Mohawk. . . it’s with a lean to the left. I cut my hair myself so in order to be different I cut mine like some Bobby Brown thing slightly to the left and no tail.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see! Good for you. What are your rules when it comes to accessories?
Dola Billz: Simple, neat and use it to customize your look.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I love your colorful scarves. What is your rule on shopping for scarves?
Dola Billz: Buy the ones you like, and don’t be afraid to mix colors. Sometimes I just wear scarves because I don’t like being cold, so scarves always come in handy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What about shoes? (Tell us) your favorites and tips for shopping for shoes?
Dola Billz: Kicks. I own a lot of kicks: Nikes, Bapes, DC’s, Duffs. [I] also like old school shoes like Moccassins, Boat shoes etc. My tip on shopping for shoes is to buy the right shoes for the right look.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see you love the shades, lots of colorful ones too. What’s the deal on how you select your shades?
Dola Billz: The more different the better as I like looking different from other people, and I wear shades all the time so they are like the god of accessories as far as I am concerned. Plus, I don’t restrict shades to just a sunny day, you could see me rocking some at night. Brands like Charles Jourdan, Ray Ban, and Diesel make real nice ones.

LADYBRILENigeria.com: I think what I enjoy most about your style are your tees. You wear some really interesting tees. Where do you shop for most of your tees?
Dola Billz: H&M, Uniclo, Bathing Ape, Diesel, and Pull n Bear do good tees. I like to customize my own tees. I come up with an idea for a print and pass it on to a printer to put it on a plain tee as well.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Okay. You ’bout to hit Naija. Can the Oyo boy tell us the happening spots in Naija you will touch? (Lol!)
Dola Billz: Insomia, Caliente, Grotto, News Cafe, and just chilling in DT in my ends.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: LadybrilleNigeria is about connecting and promoting Nigeria’s Fashion Industry. Who is your favorite Nigerian fashion designer and why?
Dola Billz: Wale Adeyemi. He was the first designer to actually incorporate graffiti style writing to Tees and not echo like the world is being told. Another Nigerian designer I like is Hade2 (he is based in London); and I really like a Ghanian designer from South-East London called Forreduci, watch out for this guy’s collection. It’s sick.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Any favorite Nigerian shoe designer?
Dola Billz: I don’t know any Nigerian Shoe designer, so maybe you can send me some contacts. Besides that, my cousin Aro makes me flip-flops when I am in Nigeria.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I got you). If you were not doing music or still doing music and had the chance to be a designer, what would you be designing?
Dola Billz: Everything. Tee-shirts, jackets, couture, shirts, and even female dresses, and I will get on to my designs in a bit. I already have a few sketches. . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Very ambitious and creative! For any of our readers who finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Dola Billz: Just stay cool, calm and collected and enjoy yourself because my number one rule is when I enjoy myself everyone seems to as well. . . trust me try this it always works.

You probably saw her yesterday at the 2009 American Music Awards performing with Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) but in case you missed her, we give you a front row seat to Celestina Aladekoba in our coveted LadybrilleNigeria Style Star feature.

Twenty five year old Nigerian-American Celestina Aladekoba is a dancer and choreographer whose real star power shone through with her dance performance in R&B legend Prince’s “Black Sweat” music video. Prior to “Black Sweat,” Celestina danced for artists like Missy Elliot, Will Smith and Beyoncé, mostly as a background dancer. However, her impressive skills and strong work ethics helped her secure a spot as the leading lady in Prince’s Black Sweat video.

Since then Celestina has danced for even more celebrity artists like Brian McKnight, Black Eyed Peas, Usher, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Brandy, Outcast, Nick Cannon and Jennifer Lopez. She has also diversified her creative portfolio to include acting and modeling. Celestina has made appearances as an actress in television shows like The Game and So Raven; and she has also modeled in national campaigns for corporate companies like Ipod, Crystal Light and Ford.

Celestina’s path to the top was never all about the arts. In fact, she was on her way to becoming an Entertainment Lawyer, mainly to please her parents. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Music Business and a minor in Philosophy from the University of Southern California but instead of taking the next steps to gain entrance into law school i.e. take the LSAT exam, she ditched the law school route to follow her true passion, dance and the creative arts. Today, she is not only rising and rising to the top, but the dancer, actress, brand amabassdor/model is now adding a new title to her rapidly expanding creative portfolio, musician. Her Music Business degree should come in handy, don’t ya think?

Celestina has just dropped a new single titled ‘Omoge’ and is shooting the video as we speak. We caught up with the rather busy LadybrilleNigeria Style Star to talk about her style and of course get tips on how you can look as “fly” as Celestina! Enjoy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Celestina before we get into our style talk, tell us some of the upcoming projects you are working on.
Celestina: I’m prepping to shoot my music video for “Omoge,” recording, performing with J.Lo at the American Music Awards on Sunday Nov. 22nd, and much more. (She performed yesterday).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Most of us are used to Celestina the dancer, what was your ‘aha’ moment that made you decide to venture into music?
Celestina: I’ve always had a passion for music. Dance was my steppping stone into the industry. I was a Music Business & philosophy major in college wrestling with the fact that deep down inside I wanted to pursue a career as an artist and not the so-called “more professional” entertainment lawyer career that would appease my parents.

LADYBRILLENigeria: (We applaud you for following your passion.) You’ve dropped one song so far, “Omoge.” Great beat on that by the way. Who is the beat maker and what is the song really about?
Celestina: Quin Pearson of “Missing Sounds” is the producer. The song is an introduction to a sequel to come. The main idea is women empowerment. Once the sequel is released I think the full picture will be very clear.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see you are choosing a sexy route. “Sweat dripping all over me” (Lol!) Is that because sex sells? Go easy on the fellas mama!
Celestina: (Lol!) Actually I say Black Sweat dripping… Most people know know me from working with Prince most especially in his music video “Black Sweat”. I still have folks who call me ‘black sweat’ till this day… (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Oh Okay. At least now we get it. Lol!) Just curious, what Nigerian musician is currently blazing on your IPOD?
Celestina: Asa, she is amazing.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Yes she is. I was just listening to her this past weekend.) You appear to have a very bubbly personality. Does your personality affect the way you dress?
Celestina: I’d like to think so…but many a time I find that people are wowed by my persona and don’t expect me to be as nice or funny. I’m always asked if I’m a model and I guess there are stereotypes for a person with a modelesque type swag that doesn’t encompass charisma.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Who are you telling?! I understand you. Lol!) Okay let’s delve into our style questions! How would you describe your style?
Celestina: Depends on how I feel. Sometimes it’s tribal couture, other times edgy, and there are definitely days when I’m just a plain Jane. . . (Lol!) But I do have a fetish for unitards and tights. (smiles)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (smiles) You danced in many music videos. Which one, so far, do you believe captures your style sense off and on stage?
Celestina: Honestly I don’t think you will get the full essence of Celestina until my own music videos. This is where I can showcase ‘me’ and ‘my alter egos.’ When working with other artists you have to play the role you are being casted for and fit their creative team’s vision. I guess that’s called acting. . . (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You have rocked many red carpets across the USA. Who are some of the favorite designers you enjoy wearing on the red carpet?
Celestina: Sue Wong put a fabulous dress on me a couple years ago and I was strutting!!! But I like working with stylists like Douglas VanLaningham.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Have you made a grand entrance on any red carpet decked in a hot Nigerian designer outfit? Your answer better be “yes!” (Lol!)
Celestina: Okay I won’t say no… (Lol!) I’ve worn jewelry by Nigerian designer Yinka Blaize. I’ve worn Marina Zoe by Yinka Blaize at numerous events.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Describe your body shape for us?
Celestina: Bangin’! . . . (Lol!!!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I see self-esteem is not an issue for you. Let’s get into a bit of a style pop quiz to really get how you style your “bangin’” body shape ‘Omoge’ (Lol!)

LADYBRLLLENigeria.com: I am most comfortable in?
Celestina: leggings/tights. You can dress them up or dress them down. They’re comfortable and great for movement.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If I wasn’t dancing, singing, hosting, acting (Phew!) (Lol!) or I am stilling doing these and have the chance to be a designer, I would design?
Celestina: Gonna throw a curve ball. . . I’d go into cosmetics. Make-up!!! As for clothing. . . I will definitely focus on fashion for tall curvy women at a reasonable price.

LADYBRILENigeria.com: (Amen! on fashion for tall women curvy women) My tightest Naija food joint to eat in my city is?
Celestina: My mama’s house. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (See. Mama can’t go wrong. Lol!) My fashion addiction is?
Celestina: Right now it’s shoes and accessories. (A playful sad smile)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) That was fun! Okay, give us three tips, red carpet veteran, on how to glam it up for the red carpet?
Celestina: Gloss, Stillettos, and a smile.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You definitely have “Cwagger” whenever you are on stage or just plain in front of a camera. (Lol!) For any of our readers who finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Celestina: Believe in yourself and commit to the character. That will outshine everything. Your exterior can be on point but if the interior is lacking you’re just another boring pretty lady on stage.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Alright Omoge, ose gan. (Thank you much!)
Celestina: Mo dupe (grateful) (smiles)

LadybrilleNigeria Style Star is a fun feature on Nigerian celebrity designers, actors, artists and other personalities, worldwide, who from our research, have a strong style sense. We track these stars down and in a really relaxed, fun and straightforward way, learn all we can about their style sense and of course get tips on how to look and stay “fly” just like them! For a possible feature or to suggest a Style Star, send an e-mail to (info@ladybrillenigeria.com).
********************
“U should know [his] “P”” and if you don’t, allow us to help you get with the program.
Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye (yes the Taylor Swift crazy ‘Ye) are some of America’s celebrities who wear something today and the next day the streets are literally rocking the same looks! Nigeria has not really had a style star with such magnetic power . . . that is until Naetochukwu Chikwe aka Naeto C, rapper and producer.

Naeto’s style is as viral as his songs and slogans. He, for example, began rocking Hausa caps matched with his stylish clothes and almost like his first major hit song and slogan, “U Know my P,” the streets took to doing the same. Naeto C has since coined numerous slogans, many of which are now everyday lingo among and across the continent’s pop culture savvy youths.

While the artist who clearly understands style has received numerous prestigious awards for his music works including the 2008 MTV Award and 2009 Channel O Awards, he is yet to officially receive an award for his trend setting (ways). Can you believe that? Unbelievable indeed! We at LadybrilleNigeria are proud and delighted to be the first to break this pattern by awarding Naeto C. his first Style Award via his feature as LadybrilleNigeria Style Star!

Naeto, who now juggles school (he is pursuing an MBA degree) and a music career, literally helped create a demand for Hausa caps from “Gidi to Calabar” and everything in between! Talk about helping Nigeria’s fashion industry and stimulating the economy! Enjoy our fun interview with the Style Star.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: “You should know my P. If she don’t know my P she not really looking.” That’s from “U Know my P.” I think we know your P, a term you coined but “abeg” do still describe your style sense?
Naeto C: Well my sense of style at the moment is pretty much “less is more.” Jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, kaftans, whatever I feel like wearing. I keep it simple, key accessories add spice to the ensemble as well: cufflinks, glasses/shades, scarves . . . also I hate looking like everybody else so standing out is important to me . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I remember seeing you rock the Hausa caps and saying, “that’s HOT!” like Paris Hilton would say it. (Lol!) Now it is a trend everywhere. Was that deliberate or you just threw the hat on without really thinking much of it?
Naeto C: It was deliberate. I knew I could pull it off and make it look cool and you are right, a lot of people identified with that. In the States they wear fitted caps, I was like I’d probably stand out more in Nigeria if I did the Hausa cap, the only difference is it is more ethnic than fitted caps . . .

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: I always feel like whether performing and certainly in any music video I see you, your “P” comes across (heavy). “Kini Big Deal,” ‘Ringtone” “U Know My P,” “Ako Mi Ti Poju” and the list goes on. Is your style sense innate? Were you born with it?
Naeto C: It is all about a (belief in self) (and) conviction. When you study yourself, you should have a realistic understanding of what you’re good at. When it comes to being me, I’m the best at it. So I’m really just being me and anyway a good sense of style sometimes means a good stylist but that’s not me though, certain things just have to be innate, you can’t buy “P” you know? (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (I know. Look at you! Lol!) What’s your favorite music video to date that you feel truly captures the essence of your style on and off stage?
Naeto C: Probably the Successful P-Mix, because you get to see me at the Channel O Awards, in the hotel, hanging out in Mandela Square etc.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: MTV MAMAs Awards 2008, you killed it with the suit! Everything from head to toe was on point. Who were you wearing?
Naeto C: Okunoren Twins, they are my friends and I love their clothes, Bespoke all the way. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Give us some style tips on how to shop for the right suit for the “fellas” reading this?
Naeto C: I have mine tailored to fit most of the time so it fits just right. I’m into European cuts when it comes to suits so I don’t do baggy or anything loose. . . when you’re fitted, those kinds of suits look great. Next is a shirt. [It] should probably be a light color to contrast with the color of the suit. I love white shirts . . . then a tie to complement your combination . . . and of course first-class cufflinks. I always have gold and silver ones. I just got some killer Ferragamo cuff-links. You can literally spot me from a mile away once I wave my wrist in the air. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Ako e ti poju (your yanga is too much) lol!) If you were not a musician or you still are and decide to branch into the world of design, what would you be designing?
Naeto C: I’d be designing denim, probably jeans.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Who is your favorite Nigerian designer and why?
Naeto C: Okunoren Twins because their clothes compliment my aura so well. It’s beyond swagger, I promise you. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Na wa o! The “P” is heavy) You always seem so laid back. Do you ever stress? (Lol!)
Naeto C: Yes o! But that’s behind the scenes. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Hmmm . . . I doubt you even stress behind the scenes. You always look so cool, calm and collected). What is your favorite Naija spot to go for a good time?
Naeto C: Depends if it’s in Abuja or Lagos, I’m simple though, wherever there’s fresh air, good food, good music and good company.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Where is your favorite getaway vacation spot in Naija?
Naeto C: I’m always working so I don’t even know where one would be. (Lol!) If you know a couple, holla at me . . .Obudu Ranch seems like a long ting though. (Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Fo’ sure) Shades are one of your signature looks. What is the rule on shopping for shades?
Naeto C:Try them on first. Go with the ones that complement the structure of your head and your face so you no walk around with a windshield abeg. It’s necessary.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Lol!) What about shoes?
Naeto C: Depends on your style. . . I’m simple. I do Chuck Taylors, slippers, a lot of white sneakers, pointy shoes, color loafers all because they match my dressing really and they are all comfortable.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What is you favorite cologne to wear and why?
Naeto C: Terre D’Hermes. I can’t explain. You need to smell if for yourself, it’s just spot on!

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When it comes to grooming give us three rules every guy must follow?
Naeto C: Take care of yourself, hair, nails and dress well, always.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Finally, for anyone that ever finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing, etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together i.e. stylish?
Naeto C: Just be yourself. If that’s not enough, ask someone you know is stylish for advice.

Omawumi Megbele is one of those emerging artists whose powerful vocals and flexible range reminds you of American Pop Star Christina Aguilera. Indeed, it will be no surprise if, in future, her name is inscribed in Nigeria’s music history books as an outstanding female vocalist. The very talented artist is also one of the few Nigerian/African artists with the ability to successfully and confidently deliver varied genres of music ranging from R &B, Pop, Kwaito to Reggae. Her flexibility is indeed what helped her secure a spot as first runner up in the 2007 West Africa Idols reality series; a licensed reality music series from Simon Fuller’s American idols.

Omawumi’s powerful singing ability is, however, not the only thing that grabs your attention. Equally captivating is her style sense. Whether she is on the red carpet or out and about, the style forward singer turns heads with young, fun, fresh, modern hair styles and colorful dresses that balance her curvy all over the body shape. If you have also been paying attention, you will notice her signature style of incorporating elements of Nigerian local fabrics in almost anything she wears. It is indeed why she is one of our featured LadybrilleNigeria Style Star. Enjoy.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Je vous ai entendu parler français. Comment vas-tu? Comment est la vie? (I heard you speak French. How are you? How is life?)
Omawumi: Oui, je vais bien merci.(Lol!)

LADYBRILLENigeria: I understand you are from Warri, Delta State. Your last name implies that but curious about the first name. It seems like a Yoruba name. Are you Delta Yoruba?
Omawumi: I don’t think there’s any such language as Delta Yoruba, I’m Itsekiri from Warri and our language is similar to Yoruba but we have different cultures.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Got it.) Alright let’s “get into the music” before we really get into the fashion. You signed a recording contract with Sony BMG Africa coming off the heels of Idols West Africa and huge media recognition, continent wide. Why has it taken this long for your first album, which is forthcoming soon?
Omawumi: I was signed to SONY BMG Africa through Pan African Entertainment (they ran the Idols show). I think they had complications as to the piracy issues in Nigeria or something and this slowed down the process. When the contract terminated, I decided to follow through on my own, with investors(of course). As for why it took this long, I wanted to come with something that will make my fan say ‘wow! She didn’t disappoint us.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Quite subtle but you no say we at LadybrilleNigeria dey pay attention to the little details! I noticed on your (soon to be released) album cover the Wonder Woman/OMA Records tag. Is Omawumi Wonder Woman/OMA Records label owned by you?
Omawumi: Hmmmn una sabi notice o! . . . Yes it is owned by me and some stakeholders who prefer to be anonymous.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: (Congratulations! I guess the first woman owned Nigerian record label?) I have listened to “Chocolata,” among many on your upcoming album. FIERCE! I can’t wait for the video for that. Tell us briefly what inspired “Chocolata?”
Omawumi: ‘Chocolata’ was a name I call my dark skinned friends and I was called tomato(Lol!). It was the first song Dr Frabz (Nigerian famous producer) produced, and getting the right words was a bit of a difficulty for me. So I just thought to put a story around it.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You have a law degree, you do music and I hear dabble in fashion. Do you also design?
Omawumi: A little, mostly for myself and my friends.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Whether it is a halter dress, a strapless off the shoulder gown with cinched waist, or a full skirt, it doesn’t matter, you always manage to incorporate Nigerian local fabrics in the designs you wear. Is this a conscious effort to promote Nigerian local fabrics or do you just wear and go?
Omawumi: Yes. It is an effort to promote Nigerian local fabrics,a way of being identified plus its way cheaper. (chuckles)

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: How would you describe your fashion style and what do you think it says about you?
Omawumi: I like short stylish dresses because I like feeling sexy and comfortable. I like short bouncy hair styles because I love accentuating my neck and shoulder. I don’t really know what it says, I just go with the flow.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Please don’t tell me you also go to Bobby’s Signature for your hair (Lol!)! If so, it’s a wrap. I am moving to Naija (so Bobby can do my hair). (Lol!) Who does your hair?
Omawumi: Yes I go to Bobby’s sometimes. That man is a genius plus he has some bad hair stylist there, Abbey etc. I also have two great hair stylists called Destiny and Henry.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You’ve rocked braids, curls, perms, afros. You no tire? (Lol!) What’s your favorite look so far?
Omawumi: It’ll have to be the afro and short straight bob with fringes but people say I look great with braids.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: So far so good, we have “In the Music” and “Today Na Today” videos. Which of those two do you think truly captures the essence of your style on and off stage?
Omawumi: Both of them in different ways.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: If you were not doing music or still doing music and had the chance to be a designer, what would you be designing?
Omawumi: It’ll be between clothes and crafts.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Who are your favorite Nigerian designers so far?
Omawumi: Ohh I have a lot of them, from known designers . . . Data Okorodudu, St Genevieve, Zizi Cardow, Bawo Akinwande of Scissors,Deola Sagoe, Ituen Bassey,Lisa Folawiyo (and so forth).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What shops in Naija do you go shoe shopping?
Omawumi: I buy shoes anywhere as long as I love (them).

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: What is your highly recommended hot spot as Nigerians worldwide prepare to descend on Naija, in terms of ambience and customer service, for a great time?
Omawumi: Well I hang out in places where I feel at home and I can let my hair down. Where I can meet with friends and enjoy good food sometimes and Swe Bar in City Mall comes 1st. Atlantic Bar on Adeola Hopewell, Prest Boat Club for Jazz.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: Give us your three tips for maintaining a healthy skin?
Omawumi: Bath regularly, stay out of the sun or use sunscreen if you must, use a good moisturizer.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: You say “e dey do me chocolata when you smile at me.” What kind of smile do you consider a “Chocolata” smile? (smiles)
Omawumi: The key to a great smile is to smile from your eyes…there’s a saying that a smile goes a mile. That’s a chocolata smile.

LADYBRILLENigeria.com: When it comes to stage presence, (I happen to think) you are one of the few Naija artists I have noticed so far with a compelling and commanding stage presence. For any of our readers who finds themselves in the limelight (giving a speech, performing etc.), what is your number one tip on how to make sure they look well put together so they project confidence?
Omawumi: You have to boost your confidence level. For me, I give myself a brief pep talk and I pray. I maintain eye contact and I always try to have fun being and loving myself.
